sand blasting at home

ive been trying to get the paint off an outboard and its gettin messy

I haven't personally ever blasted at home but we have a small blast unit at work we just make a Barricade out of cheap tarps (sides and a floor) so that most of the shot is collected and can then be reused. this will cut down on waste and mess but you will get shot to hell with the rebounded shot off the walls

I fix sandblast gear for a livin.Most backyard guys general have a timber frame set up with containment sheeting nailed to it on a concrete floor if you want to resuse the media. Good idea to have an air feed helmet or a good resperator.
Is the motor still together or just doing the cases.

I've done a couple of small things, the sand (garnet) goes everywhere, it bounces back at you hard so you need long pants, long sleeves, gloves, full face mask etc

yeah and christ you use alot of it! at 25 bucks a small bag I would want to recollect it. i stick to using a wire wheel for most stuff even after buying the sand blaster. easier to set up, less stuffing about and faster.

sand blasting = brilliant if you have a brilliant set up.

Whatever you do DON'T use sand as a blast medium as it is very dangerous for your health.

very cool, so does that just attach to a normal karcher and suck the sand through the extra hose? does the risk of silicosis disappear when its done in water?

Maybe not eliminate, but certainly reduce. You would be standing further away from the nozzel, and the water would help to stop dust rising up.

Would be interesting to know if these things are actually any good at blasting compared to a good air setup.

Get a cheap 2 man tent($20) to do it in. Makes life and clean up a little easier.

the wet kits are ok, I used to sell pressure washers or a living and sold those kits as well as larger ones, the bigest problem is the media has to be kept VERY dry or it want draw, also sometimes the venturi system allows water back down the draw tube which doesnt help and it is near impossible to reuse the media. When they are working they do a great job though and are fine for small home jobs. they wont be as effective as a proper traditional blast job though

silicosis is from dust inhalation.Its not real nice and typically you would find it comes about later on in life. You can get the same from any dusty environments which can be inhaled, EG coal, dust storms, farming, 4wding, wheat silos, etc.
It depends on concentration and exposure of the contaminant and other factors like smoking or genetics can increase the problem. Im no expert (and really not that interested in medical things), and only know this as my grandfather got this from being buried in a coal bunker on a ship.

Wet sandblasting should markedly reduce or eleminate dust. There is a better pic on the link below. Looks pretty simple

and decided to buy a grinder and a wire brush and do it with that intead!

came up prety good and im trying not to fart cause i know its gonna be dusty!

carp every where but it did a good job and now ready to paint!

~20000 people worked at wittenoom (asbestos mining town) at its height. ~800 of those have died from asbestos related diseases. So the odds are better (for death) than smoking. But as with any of these health hazards, there will be more people walking around than dead or incapacitated.

The effect of dusts are related to particle size (and surface area). Smaller particles can be inhaled more deeply and have more effect. Sandblasting breaks the sand grains into smaller pieces, and/or abrades small particles from the grains. Concrete cutting is much the same.

Working at a quarry/mine (or sex on the beach) is nowhere near as hazardous, as the particles you inhale are much larger and fewer (in number and surface area).
