nissan 4.2 diesel or toyota 4.2 diesel

why is it in all magazines i read alot of them rav on with the toyotas 4.2 diesels how good they are and all the rest of it, yet everyone i know with an 80 or 100 series has either rebuilt there donk or the ones that havn't are chewin more oil than fuel, and yet i never see many 80s or 100s runnin turbo setups like alot of gq or gus gettin around now, maybe im looking at things one eyed, ?? i try but i have never seen what a lot people see in toyotas

ive got a td42-t, 12ht and 2h and driven plenty of 1hz, and really sorry to nissan, and it could just be extra weight or something of the like in the car, but the nissan seems to need the turbo to bring it up to the drive-ability of the 1hz. The 12ht is just streets ahead of both even though its 15 years older than the engine in my nissan.

Difference between the 2 in terms of turbo-charging is i suppose summed up in terms of the manufacturer's attitude. Toyota came up with a whole new head, direct injection, bigger conrods, piston-skirt cooling, and all the rest for their turbo motor. Nissan just slapped a turbo on the side of their standard engine. Gives you an idea what each standard engine is capable of per respective company engenerds.

I suppose its like everything else in the cars for the difference between the two. Toyota is more refined for the job its designed to do and runs well doing it, but dont go outside design specs please. Nissan just slapped an underpowered tractor engine in that you can make heaps of changes to without too much worry, but dont expect it to be refined in its standard form. Same as suspension design and mods.

i havent had that much to do with the toyota engines but if you type them into google you can see alot of why did it throw a leg out the side of the block. but the SC1HDFT go really well but they have there issues to, not saying nissan 4.2's dont have any issues either though.

seeing as the Nissan engine started life as a truck engine, you might find it was designed for turbo use anyway and run detuned so it could go on and on and on and on. hence why the handle turbos so well and performance increases are good.

I personally do feel that Toyota diesels are smoother and nicer to drive, but the Nissan donks are far harder to kill. Same as you mention in the engineering side of things, toyota will build it to its needs and do it nicely where as the Nissan is a bit simpler and less refined but tougher as a result.

This is generalization though.

TD42 turbos are a solid reliable motor, but a 1HD-FTE is in another league when it comes to refinement, driveability and power.
