Hi, I'm Jimmi, I'm new, :D happy to be here.

I have looked but I cant seem to find what I'm after, found lots of useful stuff, but then again alot is just repeat tech, I have questions that i am not able to find answers to, so I need experienced help.

1.) The HJ4* series, as far as i know theres a 40, 45, 47. ranging from 1965? 1968" to 1984 , is there a listing of each series, from start year to end year, with a list of , engines; size/type, disc - non disc, 4-5 speed etc ?? I'd love to read that, thats a great place to start.

2.) my car is a 1977 HJ45 n/a straight 6 diesel, 4 spd box, drums all round, and an added a/c, NO RUST :D
lol@me, but I can't find my engine plate ?? I think mine is a 3.6L mech multi inj. ( This is my first ever diesel, i know NOTHING :( ) and i got it for $3700 regoed, with good tread split rims skinny tyres, little bit leaky and a smokeout machine. but it runs.

3.) I want to upgrade it , discs, motor and gearbox - prob just a 4.2L Turbo with intercooler and a 5speed box,, now i dont know whats best diffs etc, but i'd love to know if I can do the disc now and drop in the motor later or should i do the whole lot together because the box may not fit to the diff etc, and I know Nothing about turbos and computers :)

4.) I'm not rich :) and I'll do most of the work myself if I can, I'd like to learn how to do it

Please all help and hints and pointers welcome, even if you just post a thread link ,

hey Jimmi,

let me be the first to welcome you,

you should be able to do the disc conversion when ever you have the time, not a hard job just messy, just make sure you do it right and replace everything, i.g. wheel bearings, seals,

as for the detail you want, there is a link about all the diffs, from the first models to the latest, ill find it and post for you, check out ih8mud.com website they have heaps of info.

C) 1976, switched to disk brake fronts, has "small" knuckle pattern for steering arms, slightly smaller birfields than later 1979 and later models so still slightly weaker. 4.10 gear ratio. Usually had weaker Warn hubs or other aftermarket (but usually Warns) installed at dealer compared to later Aisins but there are a few Aisins. In mid-late '78, there are a few pinions in the diffs that were changed to a stronger fine spline making them stronger versus earlier models. All diffs still interchangable between 1970 and later models.

D) 1979, switched to bigger knuckle pattern, bigger birfield which would remain through 1989-1990 through end of 62 series that is also the same in minitrucks. Used a larger knuckle pattern for steering arms, also the same for mini trucks. Is the strongest. Switched to faster 3.73 axle gear ratio.
E) FJ60 models only: same as D but 2.75" wider.

F) 70 series models, same as D but I think 30 mm wider so about an inch wider?

G) FJ62 models only. Same as E but pinion angle was rotated up about 8 degrees towards T-case making for a "factory cut and turn" (still barely enough for a spring over but usable and better than no cut and turn). Gear ratio was returned to 4.10 but they have fine spline count so stronger. Also, axle is factory trussed, and disk brakes have a little wind scoop for better cooling. Best of this type of axle made, followed closely by FJ60, 70 series, and 1979 and later FJ40/55 axles.
Then axles we redesigned and most previous models (except for 70 series) were discontinued with introduction of 80 series Land Cruisers.

so FJ62 or if not a FJ60 axles
and it looks like a 2f or a 3f?( will this fit ?)

okay, not a 2f a 2H lol, a 2h motor and 5 speed box, complete motor as a swap for a H motor,( inc) radiator, injector pump, altenator, etc etc
will 2h motor mounts be okay or will they need to be modified? the gearbox mount to ?
anyone know where one is for sale ? or where a good place to look?

hey mate not sure about the engine mounts, but i have heard this a reasonably common engine, i don't think thed do but don't take my word for it. if you find a 40series 5speed let me know first ok... :)
best off looking for a 60 series box, and yes you will have to mod the cross member for this, i think it's a matter of moving it back, which in turn will mean new drive shafts,but there not expensive,
i know of a good 60 box, and i have the disc breaks,but i can't remember what part of aus you are in,

You'll need to install the crossmember under the gearbox if you want the 5 speed box. As for front discs, just get the whole front axle from hub to hub from a 1980 or later 40/42/45/47 series and bolt it in. Best motor to put in would be a 12HT, then the 2H, if you want diesel.

going to 2h because its cheaper, and my engine is kapoot, id prefer a 12ht, but meh any engine is better than mine atm, i dont want to race it i just want to run it and restore everything with the slight upgrades :)

Oh, not all post 1980 40s have discs on the front, make sure it has the discs before you buy, you'll also need to either buy the appropriate master cylinder, or, I have been told, remove the checck valves from your one, but I'm not 100% on that.
