hj47 brake upgrade
Hi i am looking to try and make my cruiser stop abit quicker than a fully loaded freight train and i am just making sure i have things right before i go throwing money at parts,
1: will the front calipers off a V6 4runner (tin top not resin roof) bolt onto my existing mounts i know they will fit the 60 series and also what pads do i have to run i have read that later model 75 series will fit if so what year
2: will a 80series booster and master help, is the 80 drum rear as well and will i have to change my big vacume boxunder the cab
3: my mate told me that on the early model hzj75 that there is a handbrake adjuster on the drums that works in such a way that when you pull your handbrake leaver it tightens your rear shoes if needed, i would like this i understand i will need backing plates off a model with this will a 60 series have it
thanks Shane Mulcahy

Re: hj47 brake upgrade
So nobody knows anything
Re: hj47 brake upgrade
Well if the 4 runner front calipers fit on a 60, you'll be able to install them onto a 47. Question is, does the existing master cylinder have enough guts to push the bigger pistons in the 4 runner calipers? Have you reconditioned the existing front calipers? I did this and it made quite a difference.
Re: hj47 brake upgrade
IIRC - Use DBA slotted 60 rotors, later 4 pot (twin 45mm) calipers(Runner or 80s), and the m/cyl off the Runner or 80s.
and wear your seatbelt

Thanks Shane Mulcahy

Re: hj47 brake upgrade
so just to let you all know i have worked out to use 91 surf caliperswith the 42mm pistons as they fit to the 20mm thick rotor as the 80 series 45mm pistons are made to fit a 25mm rotor, these would work but wouldn't be able to use the whole brake pad, i am going to buy the master and booster from a 80series any other ideas would be greatly appreciated

Re: hj47 brake upgrade
My standard HJ47 brakes, fully rebuilt, lock up my 35" all terrains on ashphalt. Dont know why you'd want more.
I'd rather be biologically honest, than politically correct.

Agree with the guy with the beard. Adjust your brakes properly (and make sure the rest of your system is working properly) and you'll be more than happy with what you have.
Re: hj47 brake upgrade
so you both agree that it isn't worth it so if i just rebuild my front calipers and put new slotted rotors it will help did you upgrade the rear brake system to the handbrake adjusting hzj75

Re: hj47 brake upgrade
I thought HZJ75 were disc rear?
Where you ever happy with your brakes? Did they just get worse and worse over time or were they crap from the start?
Are you aware of a problem with your calipers that require you to rebuild them?
I find in most situations where people are not happy with the braking of their vehicle it's because the rear brakes are way out of adjustment. Adjust the rear brakes and its a different vehicle. Do you know how to adjust your rear brakes?

Re: hj47 brake upgrade
im with ray on this one adjust the rear brakes and go from there when i first got my cruiser the brakes were average i ended up renewing all the worn parts pads, rotors and shoes and rebuilding the front calipers and the car stops now, really well thats all id recommend.
hj47 ground up resto 2inch bodylift,2 inch suspension front and rear tjm Diff locks, arb bull bar,190l sub tank, turbo and intercooler set up would i do it again Yep
Re: hj47 brake upgrade
andalong with ajusting the rear brakes ajust the pedal freeplay and the pushrod gap between booster and master after 20+ years these are normally outta ajustment and can make a big difference
