So have you got a spare set of spider gears? I have a set from a rear diff, and probably the front one as well, sitting under my house, from when I put my diff locks in.

Your better off putting a set of rears in, 4 pins instead of 2, to share the load. They are fully compatable.

I will check tomorrow, when I get back home from work. You can have them for the postage.

Pretty sure I do, as Detriot lockers replace them both. Um, I also have a pair of front axles. And thats just amongst the spares I have lying around. I am going to have a huge cleanup in the very near future, and all will be going for scrap if not sold/given away in the meantime.

Yes, just looked, boxed set, one front set- one pin with 2 spider gears, and a rear set- cross pin and 4 spider gears, but only 3 side gears- the ones with the splines thats the axles go into. The 4th one must be close by.

Tell me if you want them.

Welding the gears can ( as you've discovered ) not work out.....

Apparently in WWII troups used to melt down bullets ( the lead bits ) and pour the molten metal into the removed dif centre to lock it up.

You would think that lead might be a bit soft but as it binds the entire surface of the gear sets it was apparently a very effective solution.
As lead has a low melting point its probably reverseable as well. Now days an expoxy resin fill might work just as well.

Hows that for relevant without being usefull ?
( usual disclaimers )

It seemed like a much better idea when I started it than it does now.

GOOD INFO , BUT WELDING THE GEARS FOR ME WORKED OUT GREAT! THE FRONT TYRE WAS 4 FEET OFF THE GROUND CRAWLING UP A STEEP WASHOUT. IT WAS WICKED FUN. IT WAS ONLY WHEN I WAS REVERSING UPHILL WHILST TURNING I SNAPPED THE CV. AND IT WAS ONLY BECAUSE WHEN I UNLOCKED THE HUB (DUE TO THE FACT THAT I NEW I WAS GONNA SNAP THE CV) I DIDNT GET THE LOAD OFF THE HUB SO THE HUB DIDNT ACTUALLY UNLOCK. IT JUST SEEMED SO. MY MISTAKE.

Should have been a PM, including pic. I will have another go.

Better still, I will post it here. This is what I have. Cant find the 4th side gear. But theres certainly enough to do the front diff.

As for the front axles, which side are you chasing? I have a used long side wrapped in grease and plastic, so I would say its in good nick. I have a used short side that is sitting out on my bench, so I cant guarantee perfectness of the CV joint.

These are all out of an F75, 1985 Rocky.

And yes, locked front diffs make a huge difference to off road handling. You can imagine the fun times I had with twin diff locks in mine.

HEY MATE , i finally fitted the spider gears today. I was very suprised when I tried to fit the axle into the diff, the spline would not insert into the side gear . on closer inspection I found that my axles have a larger diameter spline to the the gear you sent me, please tell me that you have the passenger axle that you could send me as I am up shit creek without it unless i pull it down and try and stuff the stick locker back in. cheers
