ANYONE WITH A HILUX 5L TURBO SET UP????HELP PLEASE

Post by luxtc »

hi guys i have a 5L in my 94 lux with a safari turbo kit i have been to a turbo place to find out the answer with not much success so thought id ask here.i have a pipe that runs off the side of the turbo it runs done and tees off to the waste gate the comes up and goes in to the air intake just before the turbo.my understanding is that it should come off the side of the turbo and straight to the waste gate and ive got 2 other mates with 2.8 turboed luxes and thats wat theres does.
are the 5L different?
is there and reason for this?
would it do any harm if i ran it from the turbo straight to the waste gate?
ive rang safari and spoke to a guy named david and he was rude and hung up on me and i rang out of town 4x4 and they were no help either.

can someone help???

The wastegate actuator line normally connects to a fitting in the compressor housing or front spout of the turbo. It doesn't need to go anywhere else in less there is a boost T in the line which may bleed its air pre turbo.

From wat u describe with the plumbing u would leak boost thru the T piece into the intake pre turbo, this would lower the pressure going to the wastegate thus keeping it closed longer to up the boost pressure.

Id get a boost gauge to c wat the pressure is doing.

that is exactly wat i thought to and i have a boost guage on its way.but remove the pipe that is fed into the air intake before the turbo will this raise the exhaust gas temperature by any chance?or cause any damage to the engine at all? cheers

Yours is the 5L mechanical engine isnt it?

All I can see happening is the wastegate getting a higher pressure sooner thus opening it earlier which will lower your boost pressure.

Maybe take a quick photo and upload just so we can confirm.

ok ... just take the longest hose off... and blank that off ... and join the 2 shorter hoses together ... fixed

at the moment. you have both vacuum and boost working against each other. creating an initial boost spike, this would eventually equal out. But still you dont want boost spikes on an originally N/A engine.

so just run from the turbo to the actuator?will i have any problems with fuel or exhaust gas temperatures?

Yea.. the compressor cover of the turbo to the wastegate actuator

the only thing that will change is u will get better response form the turbo spooling up faster due to the compressed air not being redirected into the inlet of the turbo. should also eliminate the boost spike that u would get from ur current setup. fuel or egt's wont change

I have no idea why they set it up like that. Block that pre turbo fitting off and use it for menthyl injection if u ever fit it ;)

Wouldn't the extra hose teeing to the turbo inlet pipe act as a sort of bleed for the wastegate actuator causing it to stay closed longer and build more boost?
The way I see it working is the boost in the actuator won't build as quickly as it has an escape before the actuator.
I agree that it should probably be blocked off. Would be interesting to find out what boost it sees as is. That would be telling - should max at around 10psi stock?

the turbo would spike when coming onto boost, but only by a couple of psi most likely

Check the hose and fitting to the inlet side. If there is a restrictor in there it is probably set up as a controlled bleed to increase boost pressure. Get your boost gauge hooked up and find out what's actually happening.

The wastegate probably only allows a low boost setting so they have tried to raise the max boost pressure buy doing this. I'd just fit a proper boost bleed valve.

Theres no restrictor in the hose its just a hose.if i block the hole in the air intake and just run a hose from the turbo to the wastegate will anything be affected?will it run to much boost?

That is how the kits are designed.
Leave it the way it is for best performance.
Removing the hose to the intake will lower your boost and response.

Iv never seen a turbo wastegate plumbed that way but I can see what its supposed to achieve, obviously the wastegate is of a low pressure so they are trying to cheaply bleed off air to get it to stay shut longer. If you look on that actuator rod there might be another mounting hole which will allow a higher boost without the strange piping.

The proper way is to fit a bleed valve or boost controller in between the comp housing and wastegate this will be more consistent and adjustable.

It will not risk anything on the engine, just fit a boost gauge so you know what its doing at various revs and u can adjust from there.

Yeah it is a bit dodgy to look at I know, but does exactly the same thing as a boost controller, only difference being is its non adjustable.

The wastegates used on these setups are so soft its not funny. You can fit a simple helper spring to the actuator to perk up the boost ramp considerably while getting rid of the bleed off system.

Look here to see what I mean.

That seems like another patch up job which would just fail and need replacing over time, why wouldn't they just use a heavier wastegate that has a few different mounting positions on the actuator rod so you can change the boost to suit the application.

IMO an adjustable bleed valve is a better solution as you can + & - boost at will.

Just curious, I have a 99 Hilux and i just wanna know, How much did it cost you to put a turbo on? I have a 5L 3.0L diesel engine as well and I really want a turbo?

If you get a surf turbo kit at a reasonable price (eg $500 - $800) and do the install yourself it can be done for under $1000 easily.
