Why did nissan stop making the 4.2td.
Re: Why did nissan stop making the 4.2td.
i dont see why they didnt just make a factory diesel/gas system to pass emissions. probably way to simple for those smart engineers

Probably for the same reasons that gas (and petrol and methanol etc) fumigation systems void engine warranties.
Re: Why did nissan stop making the 4.2td.
Wouldn't it just get torque? The wheel will only spin as fast as the engine and gearing allow it.351ciofgrunt wrote:yes but I think if you locked up one front wheel on an open diff in 4wd then the other front wheel will now have to spin twice as fast due to the diff action?Mrowka wrote:Diffs would be locked together, but the individual wheels are not locked to the diffs (unless you have lockers in).

?? no comprende Senor.
Re: Why did nissan stop making the 4.2td.
the gearing is in bold, but not obvious, I was trying to point out that its the gearing that makes this happen. the gearing and operation of an open diff means that total output is constant but shared across 2 wheels, so if 1 wheel slows down the other has to speed up. if one wheel stops moving the other has to spin twice as fast.

Re: Why did nissan stop making the 4.2td.
Are you sure? If an engine has a total final drive ratio of 1:1 (for example) and one wheel locks up, I do not see how the other wheel is going suddenly start spinning twice as fast, unless engine RPM also were to change.
Re: Why did nissan stop making the 4.2td.
Jack up your vehicle and practise turning the drive-shaft while locking one wheel still. You'll work it out.Mrowka wrote:Are you sure? Re: Why did nissan stop making the 4.2td.
that's the way a diff works, so that when you are going round corners and the inside wheel slows, the outside wheel speeds up.Mrowka wrote:Are you sure? Re: Why did nissan stop making the 4.2td.
I dont wanna get anyones nose out of shape but the answer is simple for nissan scrapping the 4.2 ( best engine ever made!) and that is emmisions. Plain n simple! The greenys have pissed on every other parade and saw that they could piss more if the hunted down car manufacturers. and as far as small engines not pulling weight look at light trucks, tractors and other machinery. Everything is getting smaller and more powerful. Commenrail works almost like a petrol engine, the fuel is atomised in combustion chamber due to high psi (ussually well over 30000psi) making it hugely efficiant and making the most of each bang. Im not defending nissan but they played the hand they were dealt and in this throwaway society i think they came out on top, not like the dumb arses at toyota with the v8 brain fart.
Re: Why did nissan stop making the 4.2td.
You can still buy new 4.2s as a crate motors from any Nissan dealer.
Nitto Mud Grapplers, Lockrite, 4.3s, Trail Ready BL, PTO, High pinion rear,Gu diff with Buds Customs armour and heaps of Superior gear, 24% Reduction .
Re: Why did nissan stop making the 4.2td.
ive heard rumors coming from this v8 super car thing that nissan are going to re lease a 5.7 v8 but i think that petrol though
Re: Why did nissan stop making the 4.2td.
Also bringing out a turbo v8 diesel from what i have heard.short stuff wrote:ive heard rumors coming from this v8 super car thing that nissan are going to re lease a 5.7 v8 but i think that petrol though
93 duel cab lux. 2.8 TD twin locked. Big tyres, little lift. Wide stance. Barwork and build up under way
Re: Why did nissan stop making the 4.2td.
I'd like to know where you heard that ^
seems very unlikely.
and the toyota 4.5 v8 is a POS they had to detune it too much to make it reliable. Gimme a TD44 stroker over it any day. Would end up costing about the same.

Re: Why did nissan stop making the 4.2td.
With Nissan half owned by Renault, and personally having suffered first hand with many facets of French Engineering, its more likely to be a sub 2 litre bucket-o-shite or something equally crap, designed to get homos to the cafe for a latte (only truckies milk coffee for me!). Oh, and you would need to have a whole new "special tool" section in your toolbox just to service the POS.old lux wrote:Also bringing out a turbo v8 diesel from what i have heard.short stuff wrote:ive heard rumors coming from this v8 super car thing that nissan are going to re lease a 5.7 v8 but i think that petrol though
Or maybe they will fix the crankshaft and have the car rotate around it

Re: Why did nissan stop making the 4.2td.
I wonder if they will do a toyota and glue two ~2 litre 4 cyl diesels together to make a V8.old lux wrote:Also bringing out a turbo v8 diesel from what i have heard.short stuff wrote:ive heard rumors coming from this v8 super car thing that nissan are going to re lease a 5.7 v8 but i think that petrol though

Sounds great. V8ZD30

Re: Why did nissan stop making the 4.2td.
the v8 supercar will 95% be running a nissan VK56DE stroked to 6 litres.
In fact right now at this very moment there is an enterprising group of Kiwis dyno tuning such an engine for an offroader. I saw a video a few minutes ago.
Now why would you use ZD30 heads when you could build a TT V12 using a pair of RD28s....

Re: Why did nissan stop making the 4.2td.
An engine made from two RD28s would be like having two buckets o' shite compared to one and it would still struggle to match a tb48 in terms of power, reliability and economy. Although it would sound tough with a decent exhaust.
Meh...
Re: Why did nissan stop making the 4.2td.
Not that this is relevant at all. But isnt V8 Supercars locked into a 5lt capacity?MikeH wrote:the v8 supercar will 95% be running a nissan VK56DE stroked to 6 litres.

Re: Why did nissan stop making the 4.2td.
have just done about 1500 kms in 3 days in a work mates 3l wagon. Spent alot of the time between 1.30-1.40 on the open roads in middle of nowhere wa. Car revs at this speed between 3750-4000 for hrs at end. The smells alone coming from the motor is why they should never have started the 3L ithas 180 000 km and allot of them at the same speed and will be for sale next week Dont ever buy a reps car. Atleast the 4.2 would have never been able to get that fast just felt like adding random useless 3l discussion. Look forward to selling my 3L and getting a 200.. Bye bye licnece...

Re: Why did nissan stop making the 4.2td.
its more to do with the gearing for its intended use than the motor - they aren't exactly hot rods
