Swivel Hub Rebuild Kit Problems.....
Hey Guys,
I put a swivel hub rebuild kit in about 6 months ago, it was the flash one from Locktup....Heavy duty or something.
Anyway, I've had a few issues with the circlips on the end of the CV's not wanting to stay there, I've had a specialist 4wd workshop look at it and after checking both sides and costing 4 hours in labour the only thing he said to me was to maybe shave about 2mm off the back of the freewheeling hub????
It was fine before the swivel rebuild kit went in, and I'm thinking maybe some of the heavy duty stuff is pushing everything out too far, I'm reluctant to use 4wd as I've heard that the diff will shit it self.
Anyone had similar experiences???? Is there a fix???

A heavy duty kit won't affect it in regards to pulling off the circlip.
I would be looking more closely to the groove where the circlip sits, if it is flogged out or the edge of the spline is rounded off it can ramp up and pop off. I had a similiar problem.
The other thing is an old well used circlip (if been pulled off/on) a few times), will elongate and be slightly bigger in diameter, helping it to come off.
So basically I would be looking to replace c clips with new ones If the ends of the cvs are in reasonable cond.
When the circlip comes off it only allows the cv to float, it cant move far and cannot cause damage. Some people even leave them off on purpose to allow quick cv change from the swivel hub end.

Shouldn't be any differences in dimensions with the locktup kit, I have the same kit fitted and it all went in fine.
Id replace the circlips, if you remove them with a screw driver or other methods they will often bend out of shape. Better off to buy some decent flat edged circlip pliers.

I did the same kit plus marlin seals in my 60 18mths ago i had the same difficulty on the long side, so i put in a new circlip but not like the original one instead the one with the two holes to expand them one, it was narrower and went on easier.
I have had no trouble at all and have checked it twice in that time while adjusting wheel bearings. Those kits seem very good and ive done some heavy wheelin with lockers front and rear. I aint done hubs before so this thread might not carry much credibility, good luck anyhow. andy

Did you replace your CV's at the same time?
I recently did my 91' 80 series (Which I think is very similar if not the same as a Lux(I'm guessing you have a Lux by your pic)) and when buying the CV's there were 2 types, one only slightly longer than the other and they couldn't tell me which one was for mine and to just take the ones they had and if they were not the same length, bring them back and swap them over. Mine fitted fine but maybe the wrong ones would have caused a similar problem?

Yes, It's a hilux, an LN106 single cab, and no as far as I know they are original cv's.

Something else must have changed, AFAIK the kit dosen't have anything that will change the reference points from hub to FWH and CV, so if it fitted before with these parts it has to fit again if put back together the correct way.

have you pulled cv's out before or was this your first crack at it. I know in my 80 when they slide back in i give it a giggle and it slides in another 10mm.

Just re-read this, Is the problem that you can't get the circlip to sit into the groove or that they keep coming off once they are seated in the groove ??

All you have to do is screw a 10mm bolt in the end (eithr 8 or 10mm) and use a pair of pliers and the cv will slide out a little further..

when i pull mine off i turn it on its side and give it a hit with the hammer which closes the gap which makes it tighter on the cv...
And as said you need the correct c clip pliers or you generally bend them on removal..

Yes this is the issue, not enough space to fit a circlip, it sort of goes on just. Yes I've tried an 8mm ( if I remember right) bolt and pulled some pressure on it, still not enough space.....
I've been considering rebuilding another front diff and swapping the old one out and use it for spares or something.

O so u can't pull the cv/axle out far enough. U mite hav to rotate the axle via the tail shaft as u try and pull it out, it may take a fair amount of force to get it to slide out of the spindle enough so maybe a big flat blade with a hammer. Giv the bolthead screwed into the cv some outward taps. There's no reason why it wouldn't come out enough to get the cir clip on that I can think of other then possibly the spindle not sitting correctly on the knuckle.

I used everything that came in the complete kit.
Would I be correct in saying that the cv would be bumping the knuckle whilst pulling it out with that much pressure? As it definately seems to be touching something, it seems to make a knocking noise when the car corners also I think the cv is knocking on the back of the knuckle.....Which I suppose is something that just happens when the cv's left to float around with no circlip.

Your not putting enough elbow grease into pulling the cv out.
Ive seen this alot of times. The fresh and copious amount of grease on everything gives a bloody good vacuum on the inside of it.
Some of them are tough and require two people to get it done right, but if all the parts are right this is all the problem will be.
Getting a tricky bearing puller onto the bolt with a slight amount of pressure can also get it out that couple of extra mm thats required.
Ive seen this alot of times. The fresh and copious amount of grease on everything gives a bloody good vacuum on the inside of it.
Some of them are tough and require two people to get it done right, but if all the parts are right this is all the problem will be.

sounds like ya inner wheel bearing cup is not totally 'home' in your hub.

Id be pulling it down to check, better to redo it then to replace parts if they wear out from incorrect fitment.

I'll take my chances I think, as I've had a second opinion from a mechanic who has been in the biz' for many years. I might jig something up with the welder and some threaded bar just to get it out that bit further....when I get enough time to scratch my arse....

Not sure about the Hilux's, can't remember, but the cruisers differ in brass bushes at the back of the spindle, did you change them out too?
If you did it might be the difference of a couple of mm, not letting the CV come out enough.
The 75 series bush is just a bush, the 79's have roller bearing in them, pretty sure that's the right way round.
