Skool me on: Silicon gasket makers

I'm up for changing my thermostat housing and maybe transmission screen and hence need to change the gasket.

I intend to use a cork gasket but have been told it's wise to use some silicon gasket maker as well.

What's the deal with the different types of gasket makers - there's red, blue, ultra blue, silver, gold, black, grey etc?

Other then sensor safe (I assume for the O2 sensor) and temperature range is one better then the other? They all say there are suitable for things like thermostat housings etc.

If it says its OK to use, it is.

I use black RVT on just about everything and never had a failure.
Just make sure you dont get too happy with it and end up restricting the thermostat operation.

i found the genuine toyota silicone sealant works extremely effectively.

They seal certain sections on their engine blocks with the stuff.
(there's a plate on the front side of a 4 cylinder camry motor IIRC)

i always make sure i have a tube at home!

i'm in the same boat,

was told on the weekend that ultra grey is the go with diffs.

i talked to someone at repco, and they said just as long as it has a high resistance to oils it'll be fine.

this sounds like the go for me, especially with my darn simex's! lol

Get some spray paint and paint the CORK gasket before you remove the old gasket it will help seal it.
I prefer loctite 515 & 510

Ultra blue is the stuff, only problem it sets you back about 60 dollars a farken tube!

I use ultra copper for everything but mine gets hot, real hot

Edit: I also use GM Sealant around water jackets etc (ie under the V8 intake). Exxy but great stuff, a tin lasts a long time.

I use blue max on most parts that aren't near anything to hot and high temp(red) around the hot stuff.
Don't use gasket goo on your auto's pan,the cork gasket will do the job fine,just dont over tighten the bolts as this is the cause of most cork gasket leaks.
also store your open tubes of gasket goo in the fridge so it wont dry up,also extends the shelf life.

Wurth Silicon Special 250 or 3-bond. Toyota sealant is good too.

Yeah turbo and exhaust.Just check the what temps are on the tube because they vary between brands.

Anythings possible I guess, they just seem to work REALLY WELL! Maybe its just the toyota box that they put it in that makes it sooper dooper!

They may be made by permatex, but to Toyota's "specs" perhaps?!

There are many different grades, all with great performance.
I use 1215 (gray) & 1207C (red).

Best sealer I've ever used.

I use permatex #3 on just about everything. Never had an oil or water leak on any gasket painted with that stuff.
