Recommended Places for Pwr Steer Conversion

I'm after some suggested person/companies that will/have done pwer steering conversion on a fj40 in S/E Qld region. I've ruled out doing it myself as theres some fab work involved and thats out of my league. I'm chasing somebody who has done the conversion before or who is preety clued onto how to go about it. I live on the sunshine coast but am willing to take it somewhere if i know im going to get the job done well. Heck even if its just a 40 owner who wants a little cash job.

Note: I have searched and i do know whats involved but just after someone whos a bit more clued on to do the actual job thanks. I know how much pwr steer threads have been popping up lately

Not much fab work really, just drilling a few holes in the chassis for the box and grinding the shock mount to fit the linkage. After that it's just bolting it together.

But if you are after someone to do it, try Redlands 4wd Centre. I think they do them from time to time, they have in the past anyway.

So your saying you just grinded to give clearence or does it have to be moved? God i swear there must be a thread that answers all my questions but i have looked.
Oh and can anyone help me out on the link to adapting the "bush'" to the end of the 40 column instead of using the 55 one. Using the 40 column seems was easyier just have to work out how this adapting bush is going to work.

Think i might get all the gear together and see if i can't piece it together.

Sorry if this thread is annoying you's as i know how much this topic is covered.

Yep just ground it back until it cleared. Still tight but misses.

Seriously, ring every wrecker and try to find a 55 column. It will be easier than modding a 40 one. Again, makes it bolt together.

Parts list: (in order from steering wheel to wheels)
55 column
80 rag joint (found inside firewall under dash)
75 intermediate shaft
60/80 box
make a backing plate for the box or buy buds kit which includes crush tube and bolts
75 pitman arm
75 drag link
75 (and maybe 60) arms that go on top of steering knuckles (someone help me out with the correct name)
75 tie rod
60 steering dampner
get new tie rod ends
if you have no factory power steer, you will need a pump and lines

Then bolt it together! I think that's it. It was easier upgrading power steer than installing a whole system.

Right i have no idea what a rag joint is but i guess il soon find out and i'l be sure to look into buds kit.
Thanks heaps for the extra info Ricko i'l start the parts search this weekend.
Is either the 60 or 80 box superior to one another or are they preety similar?

Rag joint not very big, just takes either end of shafts as required to fit column to intermiate shaft. Check out shorty_forty thread in members, think he's got a photo.

80 box is newer, not sure on internal differences, but I would go for 80 if price isn't too much different. The bolt pattern on 80 definatley fits Buds plates, where some 60 don't. Plenty of 80's in wrecking yards now with 60's slowly dying out I reckon, plus an old part to fit. In fact 80 pitman arm will negate 75 pitman arm too.

40 column support bush info here if you can't locate a 55 column.

Good luck, it's not rocket science but it is very time consuming so labour prices might make it fairly expensive if looking for someone else to do it.

Couple of things not mentioned. If you don't currently have factory power steer, you will need to consider that once you locate, purchase and mount up a suitable pump to your block and plumb up power steer hoses, you will need to hook up a belt. How many spare pulleys to you have? I'm guessing none. You will need to swap your single pulley harmonic balancer for a double pulley unit and swap your single belt water pump pulley for a double pulley unit to make it work. Be prepared to learn quite a few new swear words (possibly in languages you never thought you knew) when attempting to remove the crank pulley nut. :D

Oh Ray so true i didn't even think of that, so i'd ahev to sort that of a 60 aswell wouldn't I ? Thanks for the link to the bush. I think this thread may come in handy for a few people theres some good info in it. Yeah i think i will have a go at it myself some of it may get the better of me but i think it could be worth a shot.

Throughout this build i've learnt some fruity languages and i think i'l be speaking them very fluent by the end of this. :D

Yeah without factory power steer, there are things I can't coment on and will miss, the joys of a BJ42 for me.

I had found the ability to curse in many languages well prior to attempting the power steer conversion. Many words were learnt travelling from Airlie Beach to Brisbane in summer in one day a few years back... Like where's the ..**??,.. panadol and some ..#?* water and a m**..?? kidney belt...
