Roothy style paint job/my car painted ....?

washing my car today and crap paint job is started to bug me. when i mean crap, some rust spots, paint chipped off to bog underneath (yeah, i know, should have got something without this). and its red. dont like red


so thinking of the following:
1. repair rust
2. re-paint roothy style with charcoal killrust i have, or another colour ????
3. paint floor of car (interior) with sound deadener or similar then paint over


please, any comments whether this is way to go or get painted properly. as i would be changing colour, would this be a major job or maybe try to get red killrust? i'm not concerned overall about scratches/stone chips, so would dyi be agreeable or just completely crap?

sure someone said they have done this but cant remember who, maybe someone can remember?

go for it! get decent paint like the killrust epoxy so it lasts a while, and do enough prep work to make the paint stick, then when you ding it or it rusts in future you will be able to match the colour.

years ago a mate painted a whole car with spraycans of blue hammered metal, it looked great from a distance :)

havent actually had a drink since january, so was going to miss this step. oh wait a minute, had a couple of beers when twins born plan to have significantly more to celebrate this properly :D


i know it describes the paint job as "rugged", probably "crap" as well :armsup: , but is this more indicative of paint used or guy putting it on. happy to use automotive paints as cheap as a supercheap etc, but liked the idea of aerosol can for dash. oh yeah, do i need to apply any coats of clear on top?

my mate runs around in a bedford van painted red rustkill all over
its grouse
when he has a ding he belts it out then sprays on the killlrust
and its preety hard to scratch amazingly
looks mad
personally i would love to do a roothy sytle paint job
soooooooo easy and simple
when u have a ding bang it out and spray with a spray pack

Painted my FJ40 in killrust red years ago (Well before roothy did!). Started with a wagner power painter and then got bored wasting paint and used a brush (after thinning out the paint a little).
Painted the fence, house and everything else at the same time but it looked good, well better anyway.
Had the car for about another three years and it was virtually sctrach proof and very shiny.

I used aerosols to paint my camolux, the colours were colorbond touch up paints, in a satin acrylic. been out in the sun for 12 months and still looks great, and very easy to touch and match. The acrylic won't go chalky like most enamels will, and you won't have a problem with thinners based primers/colours in the future.

It is not a bad way of painting a truck mines the same paint as Otis. It great to be able to touch up and colour code things later on with a preasure can Espesially when you deside you want a soft top after it already being painted in hard top form :roll: :lol: I used the same brand as Roothie and pretty much followed his story word for word except for the drinking XXXX

excellent :D i thought evryone was going to say would be crap, but got to be better than what i have.

to those guys who have done this, (bj42turbo, area54, tony78rr) did you use thinners at all or just use paint straight from the can? or only aerosols? expensive i would thought

would love to change to blue, what blue did you use dazz? or should i find a red killrust so dont need to redo engine bay????

i know of a mate who sprayed his fj40 black with red and orange flames he used spray cans and it looks sweet. The only thing is he blew the engine 6 months later. The radiator hose leaked and he didnt notice engine over heated 14 cracks in the cylinder head. :x :cry:

I used a tiny bit of thinners for the first coat and I did a second coat just for extra thickness and found thinners wasn't really necessary. The colour I used was Marine Blue. I used 2 litres one for each coat but could have got away with one but I wanted a thick coat.

only aerosols. cbf loading up and cleaning the gun for a no-bling trailrig when a touchup is needed. I get them cheap from the sister in law, works at bunnings in the paint section, 'whoops, there's another damaged tin...' ;)

A mate of mine used to paint his speedway cars with a brush. For a nice flat finish he would sit the tin of paint in hot water to thin it out and there would be no brush marks!

I painted my Landrover Black with Supercheap spray packs then added fluro green, pink and silver cobweb spray, the effect was awsome, unfortunately the pink & green faded, still looked great in a marble effect, see my site for pics

i have just finished painting my FJ40 in proper auscam colours. i tracked down the manufacturer and did the whole truck for under 80 bucks including the thinners. looks the bis.. well, i think. tuff as paint, easy to spray (got myself an electric spray gun/pack from ebay for 50 bucks) all the proper colours used.. heaps left over to touchup.
Spray cans are very wasteful as you can never get all the paint out. i was a tart with the joins of the colours.. drove my missus mad with me being a pedantic (sp?) ashole (thats the engineer in me) and i airbrushed - yep airbrushed - all the joins in the colour.

if anyone is interested i can post some pics of the post paint state.
ohhhhh shite... it really didnt look that deep!

still a work in progress... seats and roll cage missing here.

BTW i used the spare wheel as the power source for the airbrush.. just kept it toped up with the ARB compressor i already have.
ohhhhh shite... it really didnt look that deep!

have done some rust repair on bottom of passenger and driver doors. passenger was heaps worse tho. got all the old crap and rust out, then clean, rust converter, clean, epoxy, clean, paint :D

also small square where had some paint coming off behind drivers door. the new paint looks so bright and shiny :armsup: , gunna have to do rest of car.

will post pics when site upgrade is over

well, havent really decided. used wattyl killrust "delicious red" as had a can left over from repainting hubs on lux. but thinking of using white knight rust guard as is cheeper by the can. but then they killrust cans a supercheet and have regular sales :? .

oh well, probably go for killrust as is easier to get. decided on red tho as makes it earier on me, ie not having to worry so much about painting engine bay :D . this might end up long term project as about to move (and into a rental :bad-words: ) but will try to get done if possible in next month.

btw, for someone who has never used spray gun/painted car, would a weekend be enough time to paint whole car. thinking of hiring comnpressor for a weekend, can you hire spat guns as well. and should i remove the frp top to do the job or mask it up???? if i remove, would mask dash and remove seats/carpets etc and do inside as well

The enamel paints will go flat over time, they may look spesh for a while after painting, gloss up real well with the secondary flow, but they will go flat and chalky with exposure to the elements. I use the same delicious red on components both under and outside of the truck, good for a while, but even the parts under the rig lose their gloss.

ok, so i need to get acrylic paints then. sorry for the stoopid question, but should i be shopping for acrylics (i would like to use tin for exterior and spray packs for fiddly jobs) at hardwares or automotive paint places.

if i use acrylic, do i then need to put on clear top coats(s)?

Automotive paint places for acrylic, you won't need a clear top coat, unless you choose a metallic base coat. If you select a colour that is easily available, you will be able to get aerosols made at Autobarn or similar for the touchups, or you may be lucky to buy the little 'Holts' touch up cans, for the small touchups. With good gun control and mixtures, you will get a good finish, with no need to cut and polish (for a trailrig, anyway). Acrylic is cake to mix and apply, you don't need any special guns, I've even had good success with one of those CIG Easysprayers, did a mates zook chassis and body with it (but in 2 pack).

If you want to spend more and get a better finish, go to 2 pack, but add in the cost of some form of skin, eye, and respiritory protection when using these products.

Yeh I did find this happening too but luckily my truck is not a daily driver and gets to sleep with my wifes car in the garage :lol:
