Hi all, anyone done a Carb to EFI conversion using mega Squirt or similar stand alone ECU and coil swap for eliminating distributor?
I am looking to do this on my Carb feroza, I have a EFI truck I am stripping for parts, so have inlet and exhaust manifolds, fuel pump etc. I am struggling to identify how the standard ECU senses engine position (like a crank position sensor)- I understand it may use a sensor within the distributor.
The advantages of the set up I am looking at is it can be retro-fitted without the need to strip the car and replace wiring harness etc, fully tuneable EFI with complete control over engine management via laptop ccomputer and improves water proofing of electrics due to removal of distributor.
Any thoughts or experiences would be appreciated!

I like the mega squirt kit - used them before with good results. However don't underestimate the amount of work required to tune one well.
There are other applications of the HD-E engine so there are ( were... ) maps to start with but a 4WD is a VERY DIFFERENT application than
a street racer for example so the maps won't be much more than a starting point.
The stock electronics just use the ignition events to determine RPM and so don't / cant run timed sequential injection even if the fuel pressure
and injectors were high enough - which they aint.
I've also done COP for a HD-E using a cam position sensor adapted into where the standard dissy mounts.
However - unless there's some VERY special reason for going MegaSquirt then i wouldn't. Its easy to get an ECU / loom from an EFI Feroza
or Applause and install it. The stock system is very simple ( in EFI terms ) and will save you a lot of tuning pain and probaly turn out to be much
"nicer" in the long run.
You also not going to get much more power out of the MegaSquirt installation than stock UNLESS you spend a lot of time on getting a knock sensor
to work properly on the HD-E and that's no small task. Once again get a HD-EG sytem and fit it if your really determined.

I have been in touch with the megasquirt dealer in the UK. Plan is to use the EDIS ECU and Megajolt with coil pack and crank sensor to enable me to make the distributor redundant.
Having done this and got the spark side running well we will then integrate the EDIS ECU to run the EFI. I am just trying to find out how many sensors like TPS and O2 we will actually need.
He assures me that there will be a map that will run the EFI easily, the data is supplied on a cd that has many maps on it.

Why not go wasted spark COP and just retrofit a triggerwheel into the Dizzy? Just sayin' man! What is this motor out of? Looks like it has Power steer (Can see the pump), AC (Can see the extra F/Idle solenoid), and looks like it's from a FWD based on the MAP Sensor - is it from a dead tomato?

I used Mitsubishi 380 ( actually made by Bosch ) coils as COP on mine. the big advantage IMO is they have inbuilt driver electronics and only require a low level trigger signal.
As the Megasquirt was a bit low on output pins i wired them in pairs so its sort of a wasted spark system but not using double ended coils. Machined up a mounting bar that picked up some of the existing holes on the rocker cover and shortened the spark plug tubes slightly. The coils then fitted into the tubes and onto the plugs directly - all looked and worked very well.
Switched to platinum plugs so the need to pull the coil system was minimised ( its not a big thing but.... )
Liked the setup so much that i took the coils off eventually and transfered the system to my turbo Mazda BPD motor.
