td42 turbo oil drain back best spot?
td42 turbo oil drain back best spot?
just wondering what is the best spot to run the drain back from the turbo on a td42.
im currently running it into the sump but i have noticed that the oil level in the sump is higher than the fitting itsself, so the oil stays in the pipe at the same level as the sump would this be restricting the flow of the oil and bugger the turbo seals??? i was thinking of just drilling a hole in block and just tapping a thread that way it poors straight in any one done this??

Re: td42 turbo oil drain back best spot?
my return is tapped into the alternator vacuum return line.
some people really dislike this but I and many others have had zero problems with this.
Ohh must be a high mount turbo to get the gravity drop making this work.

The sump is fine, but generally where you tap in is only 20-25mm down from the top lip of the sump.
That is about on the oil level. But dont stress if it is a bit over the level. the oil will still drain away from the turbo fine.

Re: td42 turbo oil drain back best spot?
Mine drains into the sump about 5-8mm from the point that the sump bolts to the block. I 've had no problems at all with this set up.
Re: td42 turbo oil drain back best spot?
Mine is into the top of the sump too and it is below the static oil level but I don't think it's a problem. Remember as soon as you start the engine the oil level in the sump will drop.

im just rebiulding a td42 atm and found 2 fitting in the side of the block up front next to the cam an oil supply and a drain im thinking about using these. just have to see how they line up using a highmount turbo.

Re: td42 turbo oil drain back best spot?
I had problems with back pressure in the oil drain when I was on steep inclines winching in competitions. A lot of guys are tapping the drain back into the lower part of the block under the turbo. My problems were also caused by the crank case overpressurising as well. It depends on what you are going to use the truck for. If you are going to use it as a tourer then the standard drain point is fine. Just make sure the crank case presure valves are clean and work or you may end up with oil blowing by the turbo seals.

Factory turbo engines have drain back hole tapped into block, its located in rear lower boss of engine block exhaust side. looks like about 1/2" BSPT size which is around 20mm - 22mm in diameter.
