Hilux front diff.

Post by Oldhenry »

To cut a long story short I got a complete front diff for my hilux from my brother and he took it completely apart so I decided to rebuild it for my sas conversion, problem being he doesn't know how many swivel hub shims were used top and bottom. Is there anyone that could help with some guidance as to how to work out what it needs top and bottom or should I take it to a diff specialist to get the swivel hubs done. Thanks

the shims are for pre load on the swivel bearings. I have rebuilt my swivel hubs 2 times in about 2 years and have just run two shims top and bottom. I am a backyard hack with no mechanical training though.

But so far it seems to be working alright for me

The shims are there for pre load but they also play the main part to put ya swivel hub level with ya axle housing. There are tools you need to make up to fit into ya housing and swivel hub. Do a google search, you may find something.

Forgot to add that it's a good chance of chewing out ya axle seal if ya get the shimming wrong and you will have leaky hubs all the time.

Each swivel hub/ bearing will be different.

Don't go with 'it had 2 originally so I'll use 2'

The swivel hub comes with a shim kit with all different size shims, basically what you put in the top bearing you use for the bottom. Start out with around .4- .5mm top and bottom and bolt it all up (one side at a time) and use a spring gauge to see the weight in kgs it takes to make the swivel hub turn.

I just use a set of fishing spring scales, the Haines manual will tell you what it's meant to be.

Keep in mind it will say between 4-6 kgs of drag to make it move, if they are new bearings you need to aim for 6kgs as they will bed in and loosen up. But if old bearings you could go a bit less.

It is not hard just takes a bit of trial and error to get it right.
As said it needs to be right or it can cause excessive play/ tyre wear.

That's a bit of shit that the shims are going to be the same top to bottom. Do it right and make up the tooling needed to do the job or take it to Toyota.
