GU V8 Conversion - Engineering - Insurance

I am just about to start converting my 99GU TD2.8 to a 5Ltr V8 f rom a holden. My question is around Engineering.. Anyone in Vic (Melbourne or Eastern Vic) now any good engineers that I can get to inspect and provide an engineering certificate once completed?


Also interested in anyone else that has gone through this process and notified their Insurer. Any hassles or problems, Did you have to change insurer? I am currently with RACV and will call them to discuss but interested in previous experiences.

what year model is the engine? can't put an older engine in a newer car due to emission laws, just in case you we're looking to keep it 100% legal then that's something to worry about.

I think specifically the law is that the emissions must meet the standards for that chassis's year.

So you can put an older engine in. Running it on gas is the easiest way to make it comply, but given the previous engine is a diesel it may be easier to make a petrol engine comply.

Interesting, how much do think it will cost for the conversion, are you going to be using an EFI 5 litre???

Put it on straight Gas, and there is no more emission law's to worry about :)

I wouldn't put a 5 ltr V8 into a GU personlly, I have driven them in swb patrols and they where not impressive and i would not like to see them in a heavy GU.

I just put a inj 5.0ltr in to my GQ and he was really easy to deal with getting the engineers certificate

And alos he comes to you which is a plus.

You need to use an engine that is the same vintage or newer, that would be the motor from a VT series one I suspect, if you have a VN VP VR 5.0L you will probably be in trouble, if it is a VS series 3 or VT you should get it through.

not trying to be a know it all but i agree i think it would deffinatley be a waste of time, if your gonna go to the trouble dont bother with anything under 350ci minimum..
my cousins got one in a gq shorty & ive got a vs caprice as a daily driver & they are both very very average on power. & alot lighter than your gu.
just my 2 cents worth, dontwanna see you waste money & not really gain anything?

insurance and engineering will be fine, i put a 96 5.0l in my 98 gu and everything was cool.

except power that is... dont put it in unless you do some serious engine mods.

13 to 1 compression running strait gas(gas injection)
cam to suit
ported heads
bigger TB
exhaust etc
torque power manifold
good air intake

or stroke it to a 355 or 383

thats a few things i would recommend but all that will cost heaps.
i did most of those mods except the manifold, crappy gas mixer set up and my comp is only 9.0-1 and while it does rev nice it cant hold highway speeds up hills easy when loaded...

supercharge it and be done with it!
mine will be blown by just after mid year and after speaking to yella terra with what im doing to the engine i should get 300 odd hp rear wheel power!
should be nice ;)

but yeah if its a plain stock 5.0l think twice!

Find an engineerbefore you start and work with him through the conversion. Most don't like to sign off a completed job as they prefer to be part if the process
