Power steering pumps for full hydro

Post by duncan »

Well after Tuff Truck our pump is cactus its a standard VS Commodore pump that was sent to Yuris for a rebuild to run hydro we run a cooler with a fan and a large oil filter to give the system more fluid. When reved it works but at idle sounds like crap and no power assist .

Who is useing what thinking of going PSC but they have no listing for a Buick pump still to get hold of them as they havent answerd any emails

Use a smaller pulley on the front. It will speed up the pump. Good thing about the holden ones is they are cheap.

I run a worked Falcon pump. Mine car's heaps heavier than yours with the same tyres and since going HydroAssist I haven't cooked the pump. I cooked 3 or 4 Before putting the ram on and they had a cooler/fan and a filter. Maybe try a Falcon/V8 Holden pump befroe going the PSC route. Last pump cost me around $40 and you can work it yourself.

Go with a stock ford pump and you'll have no dramas. Working the pump was the mistake. They will never last.

Have you thought of going with a gear pump instead of a vane style pump that way you should be able to run a pump that is built to last at 2500psi.
I am converting my hydraulics to one of these pumps at the moment and may be able to source another if your interested.

Duncan, I run a stock falcon ea pump in mine, havent really had any dramas. Working the pump does shorten the life span dramaticly.

was running standard vs pump at tt and stuffed it coming down hard on the left front . have since put on another stock pump but put a one way valve from pump to orbital so it doesnt back feed under pressure and stuff the pump again .
so far steering feels way better no wander even at speed and doesnt hydro lock anymore.

Getting a pump modified for more flow won't shorten its life if it's done properly by a profesinal power steer shop that use a flow bench. There's to many hackers out there that don't really know what thier doing.
I've been running a flowed vitara pump for 5 years and have'nt had any dramas with it.

duncan any hydraulic shop should be able to sell you a check valve or one way valve . i am only running an after market standard pump atm but would look at a modded one to see if it makes any difference.

I have been running the same modded power steering pump for the past 5 years, the pump was origionaly built by Yuri.

One thing that i have found is that when you up grade to a modded pump you are best to redo all of the seals on all of the other related gear.

The other thing I use is a range rover resivor, from memory it hold about 1.5 l of oil as well as it also has an internal filter so anything that does fail doesnt keep flowing through the system untill you shut it down.

would like to! but some guys make money doing these mods for a living, and when you describe in detail that they are only doing half the job, it doesn't look good.... :?

I have chev P pump same as the early falcons, did the mods found here http://westtexasoffroad.homestead.com/p ... ering.html and works ok, drilled a few pistons and ended up just staying at 1/8th.
I will get a modded pump soon with a bigger cam pack. Also Evan spun his pulley on PSC pump at TT  , thought it would have had a key way on the shaft if your paying that sort of coin on modded pump.

Was suprised that Psc and standard pumps run no key to drive the pulley wasnt that hard to press hub onto new pump.

Will run as standard for a while to see if it makes a difference over the modded pump that I had
