omg an outlander!?
hey guys i currently own a 2003 outlander and i was wandering if this can be done. coz i love the 4wd ability of this car but i just need some more traction and ground clearance.
this is a quick photshop picture.
please give me your thoughts.
the car has done 330,000kms so there is no point selling it... just wandering if i could turn it into a cheap off roader...
i was thinking some basic coil springs and some new shockers for a basic suspension lift and maybe a 2inch body lift

new coils or coil spacers depending on the setup. If it's torsion bars you can wind them up. body lift is out because it's a monocoque. For the same reason you can't chop the guards out (to fit bigger tyres).
If you go coil spacers/wind torsion bar, slap some mud tyres and weld the diffs you could have some fun like the suby/lada niva people do thrashing it around a quarry and all for very small money (ie less than 100 bucks if you know a welder/mech) But you will still be getting stuck alot, and getting towed alot.
That's about all you can hope for.
And If this is a joke thread:

ahhhh fark.... i had a big response written out but forgot i hadnt logged in so i lost it. So here is what i can remember.
Loving the photoshop skills
Not to sound like a prick but i dont think it will be worth it. The amount of money you will throw at this thing will only give small gains in 4wd performance as compared to a more pure 4wd.
But at the end of the day its your car and you can do what you want with it.
What are you planning to do with it btw? Becasue i could see it being fine for a weekend beach/gravel road tourer (ala the lifted subies the 4wd monthly had in one of the eps years ago)????
I drove an outlander around for a good month in dubai/oman(outlanders can do 165kmph!!!.....just!!!!) on sand and some really really sketchy mountain roads(would have loved the low range outta the paj for those bits). Although the car performed fine it did feel out of its depth in some spots having no low range and i wasnt at all confident in the traction control. Also that coupled with the auto put the driver very 'out of touch' with the car in some of the more tricky bits where a bit more clearance and some engine breaking would have been nice.
but once again it all depends on what you want to do with it.
I reckon you should have a squiz around the net and see if anyone else has done anything similar with the lift/tyres and see if they had problems with breaking diffs/cv's etc etc becasue from what i remember the front ends on the outlanders where not the beefiest things and no bash guards etc etc.

yeah i photoshopped the tyres a bit of lift and the nudge bar... (im a graphic designer)
the original was a stock standard outlander ls lol
anyway the kinda stuff i would like to to is some basic bush tracks, sand dunes maybe, ummmmmmm........camping....
i dont plan on it being like a serious offroader that can drive over boiulders and such. i am trying to be realistic about this...
now as far as mods go i was thinking some new spring and some coil spacers. ive already investigated the tyres and wheels situation and im thinking of 27x8.50R14LT maxxis buck shot or bighorns...
its just a matter of finding where to buy them coz bobjane dont stock them. tyrepower dont stock them so any help there would be great thanks.

I doubt you'll be able to fit 14" rims over your brakes. 27" tyres is what im looking at but trying to find something with the right rim size is hard.
stock rim size on the outlander is 16. if i can find soemthing like that it would be perfect. 27-28in tyres is definately the biggest tyres i would go for... ie to fit the whell arches...
in the llong run i would like to be able to do this if possible...

the brake disc on an outlander is 10.86in...
generally speaking how far does the brake pads/callipers sit out of a disc. i might measure it up properly tomorrow. just looking at some online specs

we have a 2009 outlander that had factory 18's on it, i bought a set of the factory 15's of ebay and fitted them with 30x9.5 for a beach trip. there was a condsiderable loss of power but no rubbing. We now have equal to 31's on the 18's, they fill the guards completely but still dont rub, i believe the current outlander has larger guards and yours but you should be able to easily fit a 27-29in tyre.

i went to mitsubishi today and they told me that what i wanted to do woud be considered illegal and non roadworthy...
maybe ill save a bit of dosh and just buy a jeep or a sierra or a pajero or patrol or navara or triton or something that is a real 4x4 lol... turbo diesel would be nice

I'd be finding some 15" steel rims in that case if they'll fit. They're cheap ($65aud each) enough to have two sets of tyres if you're that way inclined, and you'll have the most range of tyres then....

but yeah not so good if you have a crash/get pulled over and defected. Although it does seem that your leading to more of the 4wd now- which will end up better/more capable in the long run.
If your not doing the family thing a serria could be a cheap way to fix the problem..very capable too.
