Strong diff gears and axles 4 LC 80?

Post by mick80 »

Hey all gonna put 37s on the 80 so gonna do the diff gears as well.
Since I'm gonna do the diff gears thought I'd do cvs and axles at same time.
It's not a comp truck I just want to build it strong the first time.
Cheers 4 the help
Mick

i wouldnt even worry with diff gears if yours is a manual.

longfields are the goods there is no debate there.
however beware that if you do alot of miles they will deteriorate, i think their warranty is 50,000 miles??

twon manual or not, if its going to be used onroad alot and the bigger tyres are a permanent fixture diff gear will bring the speedo back to correct an it with bring the overall ratio back to standard (or close to it) and the car wont be working a hard to turn the bigger rubber.
Locktup have the solid spacers aswell

some say that over time the stock pinion spacer in the front crushes down abit and basically creates play in the front diff causing it to break.

a solid pinion spacer and taking it easy in reverse should solve this issue. the 3 of us who have posted up here run 42s on 80 front diffs.

evan yeah i hear what you are saying. I just wouldnt go that way. i know my 80 TD has good low gearing and could use the revs being cut back abit on highway cruising. and it saves a grand for the bloke.

but if he is going gears then locktup are the best people to be dealing with.

I have been looking at the polyperformance axles for a while.
freight was the issue.
then the other day i asked a mob called doubleblack in vic. and he got me a really good price on the axles. so i will be getting them as soon as my tax return happens.

the solid pinion spacer i think is about $50 posted from memory??
if you were handy you could make one, but for $50 you know it works and fits.

Solid pinion spacers have been covered in other posts. I was going to do mine myself and couldnt figure out why it wouldnt tension up. Found out the spacer has to be machined and the 20 odd spacers I got with the kit where useless. Also found out from 1madengineer that the reason it needed to be machined was because it was the incorrect bearings. I got the full rebuild kit, diff gears and spacer from locktup.

After I got it proffessionally rebuilt, I drove it around the block only to find shaft was loose as. Turns out the bearing races where not set in fully (it happens).

I believe the 'wrong bearings' scenario was to do with V6 vs. non-v6 compatibility confusion (hilux talk). I guess locktup supplies the same spacer kit for the V6, non-V6 and 80s...?
