Looking for a good pic of the ZD30 VNT turbo.
Looking for a good pic of the ZD30 VNT turbo.
Hi guys
Has anyone got a good photo of the patrol ZD30 variable vane turbo? I'm trying to work out the orientation, specifically the angle of the exhaust flange in. Is it vertical, horizontal etc.
A photo of the bare manifold would be a help too.
Cheers.

I do believe I have a couple of dead turbo's at the shop Kiwi.KiwiBacon wrote:Hi guys

I may be able to take a few snaps of them on monday if they havn't been scrapped already.
The flange is facing almost vertical though, possibly a 20deg rotation towards the block at most from memory though
Re: Looking for a good pic of the ZD30 VNT turbo.
So the exhaust is heading pretty much horizontal into them?
Bugger.
Bugger.

I would say half way between horizontal and vertical or close to yeah. Been a while since I have done a gasket set on one.KiwiBacon wrote:So the exhaust is heading pretty much horizontal into them?

Dont hold me to it, but I will try and get some snaps for you.
Re: Looking for a good pic of the ZD30 VNT turbo.
Looks like it's a no-go then. I'm looking for low mount VNT turbos (exh flange at the top). So far the VW LT2 is about the only one I've found.
Re: Looking for a good pic of the ZD30 VNT turbo.
They are a low mount. If I was a better tech drawer I would show a pic, but i am so hopeless at it, i fear confusing you more than I have already.
Basically If you are looking at the turbo as if it were on the car, the turbine outlet would point about 45deg upward/left of straight up and down.
Making the turbo sit below and slightly to the passengers side of the outlet.

That makes sense. Unfortunately the photos I see online look like it can't be clocked to a true vertical inlet without the turbine housing conflicting with the actuator can. Like virtually all VNT turbos.
Under a sustained 1G acceleration it should drain fine though.

What angle do you want? I can get these for you now if you like.

Well, As they sit in the car the VNT arm is vertical , so if you stood it up, yes the arm would be pointing towards the block.KiwiBacon wrote:That makes sense. However. As I do alot of custom setups, that can easily be converted through a rocker arm setup to provide direct vertical torque even if the actuator control is horizontal.
As you will have control of the standard ecu, per g/rev movement will be adjustable giving full control over it.

Re: Looking for a good pic of the ZD30 VNT turbo.
Thanks guys, much appreciated. The manifold I intend to use has exactly that flange, but mounted vertically. To clock those turbos to the right orientation I'd have to make a new actuator linkage. Right now I'm trying to make this project simpler. I'll probably go with a wastegated turbo initially and splurge on the VNT I really want later. Which is the same or similar compressor as that one but with a slightly smaller exhaust turbine and housing that will bolt up.
