Hey guys long time listener, first time caller.....
OK before you flame me for not searching, I have, but all I'm getting is bits and pieces of the answers i'm looking for and I thought If I ask and maybe get all the answers in 1 place then it may help some1 else find it quicker when they search (the link in the bible are doesn't work either).
I'v just lifted my 89 shorty with 4-5 inch springs,shocks, adjust panhards, adjustable upper rears, solid drag ling, and drop boxes. I'm having the usual problems with my rear pinion angles, grinding etc. I have also dropped the gearbox 18mm
So here are my questions,
Can you guys give me pro's and cons of a High Pinion conversion on the rear, Is it weaker ? etc.
Next how exactly is it done? I can get my hands on a damaged front diff with a good center, What do I need out of it?
Does overfilling the oil increase the likely hood of oil leaks out the axle seals?
I know a D.C joint is the best way to go but I don't have the cash for that at the moment and I'm looking for a budget solution for now...
It's not running lockers, but I am running 35s Off road.

76patrol is a mate of mine and has given his HP rear a flogging and apart from the imported C&P had no dramas that I know of.

we fitted a HP rear to my sisters TD42T shorty about 6 months ago, we fitted a new filler point in the diff housing and its worked a treat thou i do think it now holds somewhere around 8L of oil,
we run 3.9 gears in it, with 33" tires, its proven to be great so far.
We had the lsd tightened at the same time. The times ive driven it it seems about 100 times better less noises fromt he rear end, also seems to drive easier off the line as well, as if everything was tight on the old set up, shes happy with it.
we used front carrier, rear lsd, front 3.9 gears new bearings, and a relocated filler plug, thats all from memory

I have done 2 high pinion conversions so far.
Mine is being done at the moment (it's finished actually).
Two with air lockers (one with 4.3s and the other with 4.6s)
One with factory LSD with 4.6s
Parts/work required:
Front third member
Rear LSD/locker
Set of front gears
Relocate filler plug approx. 4" higher (either use old filler hole/plug by cutting and relocating and welding up, or weld a bit of plate and then drill/tap hole for new filler)
EDIT: Factory swaybar might not fit after this mod, I'll find out Monday when I fit mine.
NOTE: When using the factory LSD, machining of the crown wheel might be required where it is to sit on the LSD. The one we did required the crown wheel to have a slight chamfer to sit flush.
Using ARB air locker does not require any modifications.

thanks for the info.. my safari is an auto and i'm still running the stock 4.11, does any1 think i'll have probs with this setup? I know it's not the best ratio for the 35s but i'v been running these gears for the 5-6 yrs that i'v owned it.
1 more question for the people that have done it, do you have any probs with the axle seals leaking due to the higher oil levels in the diff? And where do i get another filler plug?

Go to a wrecking yard that has a bent housing and get them to cut one out for you, if they won't shoot me a PM as a mate runs a specialist Patrol wreckers here and I can get one for ya.

I have gotten my hands on a complete damaged front diff to steal the bits out of i need, so i'll just cut the filler point out as well.. too easy

Hey mate, I have now completed the conversion on my GU.
As far as I can tell the swaybar should still work.
Might give you problems on full uptravel but disconnecting it for offroad is the best option anyway.
With the diffs I've converted we haven't had any issues with axle seals leaking.
I have also sealed the flanges with RTV sealant on re-assembly just in case.
I know you've had 4.11s for ages but consider putting 4.3s in it, it makes as noticable difference.

To add to A.J's post... for the filler plug, on mine we welded 3mm plate to the housing and drilled n tapped. On A.Js that we just did, welded in a fitting with a hex head on it.

Hey, I have a SWB with 4 inch springs and have done the conversion in my shed twice.
Is it weaker. NO
I run 36 pedes and have not broke mine yet. Ive had it in approx 2 years (it gets a thrashing)
I also drive to work every day approx. 30klms each way. No problems.
I reccomend getting stronger lower control arms or weld angle iron on the bottom of the standard ones like I did for strength.
The very first time I went out before knowing how week they are, I bent both arms up, snapped my tough tog shocks in half and snapped the pinnion clean off!, not pretty in the bush.

Lifting the fill point to the correct height will actually increase the oil volume from 2.1 to over 5 litres. I don't think by "pumping fast and quickly replacing the plug" you will be able to get an extra 3 litres in.....
Apparently it works fine for you, but I'd rather give instructions on how to do it "properly".

It looks to me like the filler is only approx an inch higher in the front than the back.The rear filler is just above the base of the axle, the front is just below the top of the axle.
Thats why I didn't move mine in the first place. (and i'm slack)

Yeah front to back is over 3 litres difference.
Filler is around 2.5" higher.
Actually driving DOWN something steep and then filling would work hehe ;p
The pinion bearing does get hot and wear if it's not IN oil at highway speeds for example.
Just the "splashing" around is not enough to keep it cool.
It would be fine at low speeds though.

Probably not until summer comes around again. Just bought a place up here in the Gold Coast, so I have been too busy with shit.

Front Drive Shaft
buy wheels and tires.
So not much left to do on it. But I'm looking for a job right now to pay the cost of moving back here.

Can u do this using the factory locker??? Have searched but no answers! I'm looking at doing this 2 stop the grinding in my swb but I wanna keep my rear locker
