i agree with scott.
Prado, Pajero and Pathfinder will all do what you want offroad and be miles better than a Patrol or Landcruiser on road. Interior space is not all that different either - for such big vehicles there's a surprising lack of space inside the Cruiser and Patrols (its a disgusting waste for the most part).
Heck there's even the later model XJ Cherokees and KJ Cherokees of which the XJ is a very old vehicle but more than capable of mixing it up with the more modern Jap 4wds onroad and even leave them for dead offroad - but they're quite small inside and being Yank things will need replacing sooner than a Jap vehicle though.
I'd be tempted to head for a Prado. But that's because I despise Mitsubishi for some reason.

Well I have an 80 on 35a, my brother has a GQ on 35s and my step brother has the 100 which is standard. Having driven all 3 my pick would be 80 for the following reasons
The 100 seems to use allot more fuel than either the 80 or GQalthough the 100 is auto and the other 2 manual.
The GQ seems absolutely gutless compared to both cruisers.
Both cruisers are heaps roomier than the GQ. Driving the GQ reminds me of the seating space in my laser.
Aesthetics - the GQ looks like someone put wheels on a house brick.

All cars are dual fuel ie gas and petrol.mileage is as follows
GQ - 250km on gas from 45l
80 - 550km on gas from 90l
100 - 350km on gas from 90l
On gas the 100 is thirsty. I cannot compare fuel as my fuel tank only holds about 20l due to a hole in the tank

I should add all cars have been tuned by same gas mechanic for economy driving.all have the same tour of gas setup. After doing some research although essentially the 100 is the same car as the 80 there are some major differences in engine management such as a different ignition system and different computer setup.

My dual fuel 100 gets 400 out to bout 90-100l, sometimes more sometimes less depends on driving style! It's for sale ATM pm me for specs

Think about this.
A petrol 4wd will quickly drink more in fuel than you paid for the vehicle. It could only take two years and you've fed it more than it originally cost you.
This should put purchase savings into perspective. I own three vehicles, all are diesel, it is unlikely I will ever buy another petrol.
