Using Oil 95 NJ 3500

Post by deb_daz »

Hi folks haven't been on for a while, but I have my Pajero and it uses about 1-2 liters every 500- 700 klms not good.It has just turned over to 190000klms always serviced oil every 5000 and filter every 10000.There are no oil drips on the floor of shed it doesn't blow ANY smoke even under acceleration, you can let it idle and then rev it still no smoke but you can smell it burning on the exhaust when you stop at lights or a corner, but I have been under it and you still cant see any leaks cant even see a dark mark on exhaust where it is burning from.I have no idea where it is going but it starts to get a little expensive and annoying to keep topping it up all the time.
So hopefully someone out there might have come across this might be able to shed a bit of light or point me in the right direction to look.
I thank you all in advance for any help.
Thanks

Thats a lot of oil. You'd definately see that as smoke. Get someone to follow you, if its not leaking it must be burning it!

Common sense says yes but it definately is not burning it or blowing any I have had people follow me they say no smoke,no drips nothing that is why it is so bloody frustrating you just cant find anything, I mean it might not be quite that much oil it uses but it would be close.I am going to replace the rocker cover gaskets shortly and the plugs while im in there might see something there. There is no sign of any oil on the borttom of the motor ANYWHERE again met with frustration I have had a mechanic have a look could give me any answers either just a freak thing I guess.
But thought I would ask you folk on here to see what you reckon.
Thanks

How well can you see the top of your exhaust manifold? I don't know if it applies to the 3.5, but the 3.0 rocker cover gaskets become hard and leak, and oil drips from the edge of the head onto the exhaust, and gets burnt off. I don't know if you could be losing that much this way, but it's worth a look?

Perhaps check your PCV valve too?

Thanks Scott that is going to be my first job to do the tappet cover gaskets atleast if they weren't the problem I have eliminated that section for leaks.I do hope it is a reasonably easy fix as I will do it myself to save a few dollars I'll just go slow and steady pulling it apart and hoipefully no parts to go over the left shoulder at the end.
Thanks & I'll keep you informed on my progress.

Not sure if yours is a SOHC or a DOHC. I have an NL 3.5 SOHC, and the plugs at the back end of the camshafts started leaking. The oil dripped down onto the exhaust pipe and got burnt. The plugs have an 'O' ring in them and it is a simple job (although not that accessible) to replace the O rings. It stopped mine from leaking.

MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATE what a job a real mongrel but not quite as bad as I thought but the gaskets were that bad that the small ribs on the rocker cover gasket that do the sealing had worn away badly. The back spark plug on the left bank was FULL of oil and when I removed the plastic cover to the coils you could see that the coil pack has been eaten by the oil and when I pulled it off the plug it fell apart. So have to get another one of those on Tuesday.Never ends. But I have been getting an engine light on when you brake hard at corners or intersections I thought this mighjt be the problem.hopefully.
Got one hell of a shock when I bought gaskets to do the job EACH rocker cover gasket was $93 yep each one,the intake manifold set cost me $60 and the 6 plugs $150 but I did get a discount from my shop.I have never had a car that parts cost so bloody much.I bought a thermostat a few months ago $130,and now probably to buy the coil pack who knows.
Forgot to say that ALL the gaskets were hard as a rock.
I would just like to say thanks to all you guys that helped so just again thanks I really do appreciate it.
Thanks

Yes guys thanks again for the info and help you all supplied the job is finally done all back together and on road.Still a big job for the average person but glad I have done it had acouple of set backs the throttle cable somehow found its way onto the + battery terminal and smoke the house out I couldnt touch it bloody hot and all the plastic coating melted into the cable and locked it up.As well as some stupid idiot jammed and smashed the spark module hadf to get both as well as the same fool forgot to put the spark plug lead on after refitting the new coil. Now she is running mickey mouse.I cant thank all you guys out there for the help.I have only got to try and pay it back to you all.
