I think an SR20 would be an excellent conversion into a vitara as long as you could work out how to keep the front end together.

There's a few ways you could go, depending on what you wanted to achieve, but I'd be figuring you're going to want an auto to take some of the punch out of the power delivery, or you're going to wipe out rear axles at will.

You could adapt SR20 to C4 to Hilux transfer (centered rear diff)
SR20 to C4 to landcruiser transfer (offset rear diff)
SR20 to skyline auto (same as patrol) to patrol transfer (centered rear diff)
SR20 to skyline auto (2WD) to any divorce or divorce adapted transfer ( MQ Patrol, or Hilux or Rover with a divorce kit)

It's pointless trying to adapt an SR20 to a vitara gearbox or transfer - they're not going to last with the torque of the SR motor.

Dellow bell housings do an sr20 to c4 housing.

another option, c4 and lt95, they came in range rovers at some stage, or put an lt230 behind it.
then the only custom parts are the bell housing, from memory $4-500 and a custom torque converter, $1500 or so

the standard auto and patrol idea sounds interesting and cheaper. factory parts ie torque converter, bell housing and xfer adaptor!
thats what cost me all the money.
another thing to consider is how long the standard drive line is, I know my combo was nearly the same as a sierra the the rear output.
I have since sold that and am looking for a LWB vitara to put my sr20det into, wanna race?

good luck, will be a good combo!.

The LT230 would be a great choice - hugely underrated transfer I reckon.
