Td42T which airbox is big enough for 23+psi

Post by andy86 »

Hi guys,
I have a TD42t with pump mods and a denco turbo & i'm having problems with air filter restriction.
Is there anyone out there running the off the shelf "fleet guard" or Donaldson universal airboxs?
Or If i need to run a custom air box, what is the best factory air cleaner to base the box on?

thanks,

I got this fleetguard box sitting in my shed you can have for $150.

Was originally installed for my duramax, but was too restrictive. Im now using the same filter in a custom box for more flow.

4in inlet and outlet.

Toyota airboxs are good. 4" inlet, outlet is a little restrictive but easy to make a new one.
Also filters are cheap.

We manufacture a large stainless airbox with a 4 inch inlet and outlet(not to be confused with our 3.5" zd30 style ones)
8" diameter housing, 320mm long, ryco HDA5487 filter, outlet at end, inlet on side of can to suit your requirements. complete with donaldson vacuator valve to drain out any water that finds its way in.
Airbox only, $425 inc GST
Call us for info.

hi andy,
is your td42t is a gq or gu? is your denco turbo high flowed? i've heard of donaldson 4in air boxes but never seen one in person. i'm interested in what results you get as keen to know how to upgrade the air box once a standard turbo is high flowed.

My understanding is that donaldson do not make an airbox with a side entry and end exit that fits well. some people adapt donaldsons but they mostly run them in reverse which is less than ideal.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the input.
I'm still getting the engine mounted and wired up, We have had a few complications last week.
I will make a final decision on the airbox after the intercooler is plumbed and i can see how much room there is going to be.
These toyota airboxs are massive.

Will post some pics when its all sorted.

The airbox i'm talking about is sold as a universal unit. no mounts included. However...
I am nearly finished a GQ bolt in 4 inch airbox and snorkel combo. Runs through the top corner of the bonnet, not the gaurds. Airbox sits in passenger gaurd, up against firewall. Fully tig welded stainless.
This will most likley be around $900-$950 +freight.
Very competitive price when compared to buying a snorkel and airbox seperately.
Should be ready to sell in about 2 weeks.
Keep an eye on the forums and Ebay for it.

I put one of Patroldoctor's ones in a mates GQ with a blowen gen3 the makes 480 at the tyres and it works sweet and looks mad as well.
When it was on the dyno i had guage across the air box and had no pressure drop at all. There a Very good thing.
I'm about to get another one for my car.
I just found the filters to block up quite quick but it's pulling a lot air through it i sapose.

That one looks ok, but it looks like it might get in the way of a second batery and the is a lot of piping.
Does the job but ive seen a few like that. Good job mate.

Patroldocta, the 4" inlet/outlet for 4.2TDi box. Does that require more room than factory box? I have a large 100A/H deep cycle battery as second battery, so not much room. I think I read somewhere (might only be for ZD30 box) that mounts are 40 or 50 mm longer or something like that. Is this true?

I'm running a donaldson 10in airbox and it works well for me in a 217rwhp turbo diesel gq running 26psi, but i had to modify the left hand inner guard and my batteries are under my tray.
