Hey guys. im new here (great site with awesome projects by the way)... i have a 91 swb manual Pajero with a sohc 3.0l Motor and im deciding what to do in the way of an engine conversion. Ive narrowed my choices down to A: 3l DOHC twin turbo V6 out of a GTO or B: a lexus V8...
each has different pros and cons...
Turbo route: im wondering what to do about the 4wd system as its vacuum controlled, how would it coupe with boost? Can a vacuum pump run it (fit diesel alternator with vacuum pump on the back)?
and i will probly have to buy a factory v6 DOHC motor to get intake etc off...
V8 rotue: Custom mounts etc (which i can do myself so no biggy)... Actual size of the motor, Will it fit without cutting body etc up? and the last one... I read else where that Lexus/toyota autos are the same/similar to pajero autos and a simple bellhousing swap can be done... does anyone know how true this is? and if it is, does the same apply to manual boxes? we (NZ'ers) can get adaptor bellhousings to make lexus v8s manual here so im need to know if this will bolt to the paj gearbox?
Can anyone take photos/measurements of where the paj bellhousing bolts to the gearbox please? then i can go away and see if they are in fact interchangeable. it would be a huge help...

I too am from your side of the ditch and have had the combo you talk of all lined up to go in one of mine. Then decided against it.
If you are going lexus, then do a solid axle swap first and just use the tried and true toyota running gear.
You can either buy a R151 gearbox from a 3.0 turbo hilux or 2.4turbo (LN130) Surf from 1990 onwards and then use the bellhousings from trade me you mention.
Or you can use the lexus auto to the toyota LN130 transfer case. I have just helped do this conversion into a surf.
The 3.0 bellhousing is an odd shape and was going to be hard to mate to anything! The splines are quite different to toyota stuff. Reason I say to do the Solid axle 1st is it then puts the diff in the right place to line straight up with the toyota gearbox I suggest you use.
I think it would be quite alot easier to work using the twin turbo idea, vacuum would be easy to sort, just get it from the other side of the turbo.
The next issue with the Lexus is its physical size. It wll fit but the radiator and fan setup will be a very tight squeeze. If you ahve ever seen one in a surf it is a tight fit and their engine bay is about 100mm longer.
So all in all, just do it Let me know if I can help any more.

sounds like a heap of work to fit the lexus... only reason i contemplated it was because i have one here and thought it might have been able to be bolted to the standard box using a mixture of parts.. and i know how liitle room there is putting a lexus v8 into a hilux, my brother has one in a 2wd hilux. very tight.
i will be going the twin turbo way then as i can get one cheap... do you think i should buy a blown dohc 3l motor to take parts from or just buy what i need? will there be enough vacuum before to turbo to run the 4wd system? what about when the turbo isnt boosting, there will be very little vacuum wont there?

you need to get the vac from after the throttle plate. if you have enough vac before the turbo to actuate your diff you have roadkill in your air filter or some other significant blockage. Shoudl already have a check valve inline to the vac accumulator which will prevent boosting the vac system. re-use the vacuum accumulator tank that is factory and possibly add another to increase vacuum storage ability if you spend all day on boost. an alternative may be to use a small vac pump.. maybe the factory cruise control pump??
basically the facotry NA motor is not always at vacuum in the inlet manifold either so this is what the vacuum accumulator mounted on your front x-member is for.. that combined with the check valve and no leaks means you only need to be at vacuum now and again, which you will get with teh turbo motor.

Have alook for what looks like a smooth baked bean tin behind the front diff on the drivers side mounted to the cross member. But I don't think you need to worry, just tee into whatever line you are going to use for the brake booster.
