Why five studs?

Post by Jonno308 »

This is probably a stupid question, but I was wondering if anyone knew why the hell Toyota decided to change from six stud hubs to five when they built the 100series? I would have thought six studs would have been better. It just makes it a pain in the arse when upgrading from an 80 to a 100 cz you have to get new rims. :x

Because $4,000,000 is a lot of money to toyota

I think you're wrong, but I can't offer a better explanation

Not sure myself but seems logical to me that maybe they've done it to match their van range so axle components are interchangable would save costs in developing a stronger 5 stud just for the heavy duty vans. Instead develop 5 stud for cruiser and kill two birds with one stone.

And one less hole in each rim at 25c equals another $1m saved
Then one less nut at 30c equals another $1.2m saved
Then 4 million less nuts tightened during assembly equals more savings.

Actually makes a little sense really.

5x14mm studs are stronger than 6x12mm studs.

It's a conspiracy between toyota and aftermarket wheel manufacturers.

It is true. Like you have to use 16" rims cost more to buy. You gotta buy new rims instead of swapping. It makes them more money

Same reason Microsoft went from .doc to .docx format - it forces changes to the market
But the cost equation is pretty compelling also

Less nuts to tighten means simpler tools, less employees , less costs incurred .

And more questions raised
