Re: Claws falling apart
Happened to my claws. Never had an issue with leaks/failures. But did tear blocks off down to the steel belt. (2yrs old) Not cool.
Put it down to their age (4yrs) and left it at that.
Id be kicking over a few stones if they are newish.
My MTZ are 15k old, getting 500hp through them and only chipping the face edge a little. No cracks.

Time for some radial treps
Nitto Mud Grapplers, Lockrite, 4.3s, Trail Ready BL, PTO, High pinion rear,Gu diff with Buds Customs armour and heaps of Superior gear, 24% Reduction .
Re: Claws falling apart
I had a old set of bias claws that used to throw lugs too. But they where super old and they always held air
Its a wheelbase thing
Re: Claws falling apart
X3 for the old factor, my ones that sat for 2 odd years before i bought them 2nd hand did the same. Never lost any lugs, though the same cracking was experienced.. I wouldnt really worry about it until you start losing lugs left right and centre, those cracks will probably not eventuate into anything for another 20,000km
Get out there!!
Re: Claws falling apart
looks like maybe too high pressures run on dirt roads/tracks.
I've got a spare BFG Mud terrain from an ORR Buggy and the lugs look exactly like yours.

What are the dates on the tyres?
Re: Claws falling apart
I'm currently in Weipa, have been here a month and have never run more than 26 psi on the roads up here at the cape.dank wrote:looks like maybe too high pressures run on dirt roads/tracks.

Re: Claws falling apart
Besides the cracks the pitting also looks pretty extreme, could it just be the result of the roads you are running them on, are the roads that rough?, I have not seen a claw with that sort of pitting.

The roads up here are really good at the moment. Fronts are fine and I have been using 4wd on the fast rough stuff so u would think fronts would be doing the same ?Struth wrote:Besides the cracks the pitting also looks pretty extreme, could it just be the result of the roads you are running them on, are the roads that rough?, I have not seen a claw with that sort of pitting.

Re: Claws falling apart
mate if they only 6 mnths old i personally would be making noise at the tyre shop. Thats not good enough for an extreme mud rated tyre or any tyre for that matter.

Re: Claws falling apart
When you come back down via brissy go see Fourby's (MT dealers), the dealer in cooktown is also pretty good too (sells more than Cairns). Id say the 2 tyres doing that are pretty old stock. There is a 4 digit date on the sidewall. See if the 2 damaged ones are older than the others. I know the Distributor/importer so might be able to help out if its a warranty issue. They are normally pretty good with that side of things.
Re: Claws falling apart
The only 4 digit number I can find is 1809 , doesn't seem like a date to me.
It could be more than 3 months b4 I get to brissy, i highly doubt these tyres will still be in one piece by then

Re: Claws falling apart
Only the rears? Would it be that they do more work behind a supercharged LS1?
Swap the tyres front to rear and keep an eye on them.

On the gravel (which I guess is wats killing them) I generally run high 4, so they should all b doing the same amount of work-Scott- wrote:Only the rears? Would it be that they do more work behind a supercharged LS1?

Re: Claws falling apart
When you step on the loud pedal, and that supercharged V8 starts earning its keep, weight transfers to the rear. I've seen how an N/A LS2 lifts its nose under power - I imagine yours will be at least as bad. The rear tyres will be under more load than the front under these circumstances, and any slip will create more damage on the rear tyres than the front tyres.crankycruiser wrote:On the gravel (which I guess is wats killing them) I generally run high 4, so they should all b doing the same amount of work-Scott- wrote:Only the rears? I could be wrong. Swap the tyres and see if the same two tyres continue to deteriorate.
Re: Claws falling apart
I've had 2 replaced my M/T no questions asked. About 8,000kms Mine had a big tear across one lug and the other cracked along the sidewall. Took them back at two different times and were replaced no probs.
Maybe send those or other photos to a M/T rep and see what they say?

Re: Claws falling apart
My MTZ's never had the chipping or chunks coming off, but thats probably because they were made of recycled condoms and were down to 6mm of tread left at 10K kms and on the wear bars at 29,000...

Re: Claws falling apart
All the sealed roads in Weipa are bauxite. That will wear your tires down like nothing.crankycruiser wrote:The roads up here are really good at the moment. Re: Claws falling apart
It's not the wear that worries me, its the lugs that are about to tear off the tyres.
About the wear tho. my mates who live here (weipa) don't have problems with wear like that.

Re: Claws falling apart
Deffinately get in touch with M/T rep and lodge a complaint that way you will have a date for them to reference when you do get to the tire shop in a couple of months.
Running decent HP will have some effect on wear but ripping the lugs is a new one for me .
I run the Claws on road and have a bit of HP running through them but they haven't ripped lugs like yours have.

Re: Claws falling apart
the torque your supercharged ls1 makes is the problem .
Re: Claws falling apart
Makes sense but surprises me that the tears are on the front and rears of the lugs in a few of the pictures.flexytj wrote:the torque your supercharged ls1 makes is the problem .

Good point. I guess he steps on the loud pedal in reverse too?thehanko wrote:Makes sense but surprises me that the tears are on the front and rears of the lugs in a few of the pictures.flexytj wrote:the torque your supercharged ls1 makes is the problem .
Maybe there is something wrong with the tyres, but I'm surprised that people are surprised. These are tyres that grip very well, behind an engine with lots of grunt, and these blocks are, after all, made of rubber. If these tyres don't lose their grip easily then, when they do let go, how can people expect them to not cut, chip or tear?
The mate with tyres that aren't struggling. What does he drive?

Re: Claws falling apart
I dont think its a HP/torque issue. As I said before, it was happening to me with the TD42T (140rwhp) and tore a lug clean off to the belt. Also had those cracks like in the pics but nothing ever failed.
Different tyre but its not happening with my MTZ's and a duramax.
