aftermarket axles

hi, was out 4wdriving today and broke a rear axle, therefore am looking at upgrading the rear axles on my bj42 . was wanting to know who makes and sells stronger axles and if anybody is using them.

Theres lot more places that would sell this stuff.

You could also look through a few members build up threads and see what they are using.
Or you could search for chromo axles for 40series on here, search function is a great tool on this forum.

Whats your setup? is it a full floater rear? Full floater rear axles should be alright with pretty decent sized rubber.

I still run standard axles on the rear of mine, with 40" stickys

From memory, Superior, Snake and even Locktup4x4 don't list axles for the rear of a 40. Low Range sell parts for Lux's, not Cruisers (except parts that are interchangeable like CV's etc). OPW quite possibly has the worlds shitest website but you could try calling.

Like MEANRX said, Poly Performance are the way to go. I think they are the only option for forged Chromoly Cruiser axles but I may be wrong.

Being a BJ, it'll be a full floater. You must have given it a hard time. Were you driving on the road with a welded centre?

You could try a 60 series diff on the back. Having longer axles helps with the shock loadings. The extra stability doesn't hurt either.

Ps. Out of curiosity, did it brake where the axle meets the hub flange? The axles are heat treated from the factory but the flange isn't.

Yea it is a full floater, was trying to get up a rock step when it went bang. Running 38's with ARB air lockers.Been running the 38's for last 2 years with no problems until now, hence looking to upgrade axles. It was a clean break / shear where the axle meets the end flange.

IMHO just get a standard replacement axle.

If you really want to spend the money, talk to Chris at Locktup 4x4.

I'd do the same, 2 years is good out of a 25 + year old axle, stock replacements are cheap and easy to do. If you got the money to splash though why not.

Not hard to destroy a cruiser fullfloat rear axle. I've got 80 series axles and i've replaced a short side rear that had 20 degrees of twist in the bit of the splines where they weren't engaged in the side gears (so it was about to go), and last week snapped a long side rear at the same place. Running 37's on a turbo diesel.

I've been running stock 80s axles for 4 years on 42" irocks 37"&40" sticky treps and no dramas!

J. McNamara in Vic can make you some axles that you shouldn't break. Been in the back of the ex-haultech buggy for a lot of years now.....
and i have broken a couple of longs in the front now. Never a rear.
