Spent nearly the whole day today trying to replace the stupid bearings/seals cause it was leaking, pretty much everything that could go wrong has, except for once all the bearings where the correct ones, but now the bearing locknut just refuses to screw in far enough. The manual says to use a "special tool" to do it up, I've been using a hammer and now a hammer and screwdriver but its still not in anywhere near far enough in and I'm out of ideas on how to move it. The thread looked fine (its now dark and can't check) and I think the bearing is in far enough cause I tried tapping that in further without the locknut thing over it.

Does anyone know what this "special tool" is and where to get it? or any homemade alternatives.

The special tool is just an adapter for a ratchet to turn the locking nut.

I haven't heard of your problem before, usually people find the lock nut doesn't go in far enough because they haven't punched the bearing races in far enough. You didn't forget the lock plate that goes behind the nut? Otherwise i'd double check the bearings are the same size as the ones that came out.

Actually what I said sounds like your problem. I was thinking the lock nut was running out of thread and the hub was still loose. Should've read your post better ;)

Yeah i've got the lack plate in there, the bearings where the same, but one of them had different numbers, but both ID and OD where the same so didn't think anything of it thought it might just be different part numbers from different brands, but I didn't check the width against the old one! Will do that tomorrow.

check the hub isn't fouling on some crap at the back the stub axle where the seal sits, had a similar problem before and i just gave eveything a good cleanup and a grease and it all went back together.
75 series cruiser. Turbo, 5in lift, 34's, rear locker and other goodies

In the daylight I can now see the outer bearing cup just isn't going in far enough in the housing, no matter how hard I hit it. Housing looks ok doesn't seem to be any gouges or scoring that should stop it. So I got the hub in the oven now and the cup in the freezer if it doesn't go in after this I'm gunna have to admit defeat and take it somewhere :bad-words:

The inner and outer bearings are different.........
