oil,trans,power steering coolers?

Post by georgey »

Hey

its getting to the stage in my LS1 to hilux build that i need to start doing the finishing touches.

At the moment im focusing on power steering, transmission and oil coolers.

Am planning on running coolers on all 3 to keep to motor and fluids nice and cool.

My question is which are the better coolers?

The solid aluminium fin types like this-http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/18-FINNED-TR ... 1c1cd21e30

or the traditional ones like this-http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/BIG-trans-oi ... 2c5acd32ae

Im aiming on fitting the biggest possible coolers i can fit in.

thanks for the help

EDIT- Also will they work just as effectively at the rear of the car just like the rear mounted radiator? Was also thinking of some small thermos fans.

I am running the standard commodore radiator with twin thermos behind the cab if it matter.

I've never used one of those cylindrical coolers before. I doubt it would be effective enough to cool an auto trans due to their small size. It might be ok for power steering, but because (just guessing) your truck will be offroad/comp use I'd stick with the bigger ones you can fit a fan straight on to get the airflow since you won't be going fast enough for speed to do it.

I'm not sure you will need an engine oil cooler, most bigger engines have one built in anyway. A power steering cooler with electric fan is a good idea since it will receive a work out off road.

look at the trophy trucks... the trans cooler is as big as the radiator... cylinders work ok with power steer, oil cooler isnt needed if the rest of the motor is set up well
turbos are nice but i'd rather be blown

its a stock standard ls1 with extractors, the front of the truck has been cut off so has plenty of airflow.
