do i need to upgrade brakes

Post by bundy4x4 »

I have a 85 Hilux yn65

Tyre size i have on is 31x10.50 r15
holden v8 304 efi form vs ss

tare 1485
gvm 2520

hilux yn65 (6/84)

still need to get in engineered

what is the cheapest way

was thinking of using ln106 disk and caliper and master cylinder from FJ60
or just get master cylinder and booster from an early 80series Land Cruiser.

If you go the 80 series stuff, will also need 25mm rotors to work with the calipers as your rotors will be only 20mm.
If 60 series calipers have 4x 42mm pistons or better then that would be the cheaper option.

I believe 60 has 2x25+2x35mm pistons, LN106/HZJ75 has 4x35mm, 80 series has 4x45mm (but thicker disc, different bolt pattern) and V6 4runner has 4x45mm (same width disc as ln106).

I run an FJ80 master and booster and either 4x35mm or 4x45mm calipers (were meant to be 4x45 but i never measured, externally they look the same as ln106 calipers) on my HJ75 and they work nicely. They'd certainly stop a yn65 on 31's well enough! (in my opinion)

I didn't know there was a 4 x 35mm piston caliper option from Toyota, thanks :)
As far as I know the 106 has 20mm thick rotors & the calipers with 2x small piston + 2x larger piston.
V6 4Runner & early 80 series (90-92) use same front caliper (4x 45mm) & 25mm rotors.

Hey, don't quote me o.....ohh shit you already did :/

90% sure ln106 has 4 equally sized pistons, though.

You could also fit the rear drum brakes off a hilux / surf with IFS front as they are larger and bolt straight up.

Its a Lux, so chances are, the rear brakes wont do much anyway.

Just get the booster/master cyl from an early 80series Cruiser, and LN106 SR5 front brakes(rotors and calipers), mine have 4x45mm pistons.

And just rebuild the rear drums with new bits.

It will stop nicely then.
