quarter-elliptical springs?

hey all,
just reading this months 4x4 extreme, and there is a 79 series cruiser that has a set of quarter elliptical springs?

to quote what has been done "a quater elliptic set up allows rediculas amount of articulation whille being cheap, strong and reliable to set up.
the quarter elliptical springs are basically a standard leaf pack but cut in half and attached to the chassis at the cut end."

ive never heard of these before, wondering if anyone has done this, or knows anymore info on them.

not realy looking to do it myself, but looking to learn something new, you never know when it might come in handy,

Check out some of Proffitts Cruisers rock crawlers. U still have to locate the axle with a 4-link/3-link lanyard etc.

Just to clarify, that truck is strictly speaking a semi-elliptic setup due to the leaf running back to the chassis, however after a fair amount of discussion it was felt that it was better described as a quarter rather than three-quarter elliptic to avoid confusion.

In terms of geometry it's essentially the same as running coils in that you have to have a good link setup as the leaves no longer restrict the fore-aft diff movement like they would under a normal leaf setup.

Given that setting one up is as much hassle as linking it, I'd just go that route. A set of coils is cheap as. I personally wouldn't run it on anything but a comp rig as i think it would give a fair degree of uncontrolled spring unloading under droop. Still, the owner seems happy with it which is all that matters really. Don't be surprised if it ends up with different springs before long though, it was set up in a hurry for TTC with little to no seat time before the event.

hahaha, ive seen some of the kewl things those phones come up with!!!!,

yea i forgot to add it says he has a four link, which is why im not so interested, not quite up to that stage of ability yet,

just want some info, thanks for the top tip,

If you go to the 8th page on my build thread some one has put up some pictures of a 3/4 spring set up. They are good and are cheap but you never really have full control over a set up like that. Its a lot like drop shackles they work and are great but you get a lot of axil rap. If you can I would link it.

I had a 3/4 setup on my zook and never had issues with axle wrap or uncontrolled flex like wacky shackles give. Gave me a lot more flex with no dramas at all.

ok guys,

ive had a bit of a think and done some inventory of parts floating about, and i figure i might give this a go.

i have a spare 45 series chassis and diffs. my brother in law is civil engineer (so he is much better at math and formulas) a mate is a boily and i work with a drafty. now to make this clear this is just a side project, as my current project won't fit in the shed anymore so i have a bit more room.

so i want to ask what is normaly done with the front end if anything, and is there anything i should be mind full of?
