Power steering Pump/Box - rebuild or changover? Melb

I need a new power steer pump and box for my HJ75. I've experienced a bad run with changover racks in a commodore before (replaced under warranty every 6 months or so, time after time) so i'm a little hesitant to do an over the counter changover through bursons or the like. Are my fears justified? Would i be better off having my current units overhauled by a power steering specialist? (i suspect they'd be more inclined to just fit a changeover unit anyway...?). Can anybody suggest a well reputed power steering specialist around Melbourne (eastern suburbs would be best), or a better 'brand' of changeover parts?

I wouldn't discount the option of rebuilding them myself, but i think assume it's all a bit beyond a few new seals and bearings. I have a hunch my sector shaft is twisted and the pump has had a near terminal failure.

For the record bursons has quoted $425 for a changeover pump and $950 for a changeover box - which i feel is reasonable assuming they're quality units.
Hall 4x4 has quoted $195 for 2nd hand box and don't have pumps available - i'm not really keen to go with 2nd hand gear anyway.
No new stock is available through toyota.

I rebuilt my pump on my 1FZ-FE Landcruiser pump for $110. Bearing, seal, o-rings and new shaft. This pump is a gear driven pump but they are nearly all the same inside.

Yep same as above for mine (pump only not box)

$110 Toyota wanted $289, when i recived the kit it was all toyota anyway

You must have got it from the same E-Bay guy. I checked Toyota before ordering off E-Bay and it was twice the price. As you said it was all Toyota parts sent.

Ended up rebuilding the pump myself - works nicely, doesn't leak yet and no dramas getting it apart/together (spring seat in rear housing is a bitch, though). Got a kit from the local PS place @ $110. Ended up using another 2nd hand pump to minimise downtime (not that i need have worried).

Now i'm thinking of having a crack at a steering box myself. Looks a little more advanced. Anybody done one themselves?

I got one from the wreckers as i was told that they can potentially be a night mare with a whole bunch of little bits that spew out of the box when you pull it apart. Perhaps you could buy a second handy from the wreckers as a back up and then re-sell it if the kit works for you? Make sure you take pics of inside the box and do a write up for us if you do

Yeah the exploded diagram is a little daunting. I have another box which I'll be using - wouldn't want to have to rely on getting it back together in a day! Will be a few weeks off but will report back with my findings/mental breakdown.

After a couple of thousand k's of trouble free motoring (apart from leaky box) after doing the pump my issues returned (the increased rate of leakage through the box suggests it didn't enjoy the extra pressure from the fresh pump). I didn't have time to do the box myself so had a good 2nd hand box rebuilt by eastern suburbs power steering aka supasteer in bayswater. $550 sure beats $950 for a bursons changeover unit of unknown origin. The guys at supasteer really seem to know some shit about p/s and are very familiar with the l/c box's.

reco'ing a ps pump wouldn't increase its power though would it? changing bearings and seals won't do anything to help the pumps peformance??

my ps pump on my gq is not as good as with others so just wondering if its worth reco'ing or trying to find a new one?

I understand the pressure valving can leak and/or stick. I also replaced my original pump with another 2nd hand pump which i rebuilt. My old pump appeared to be in much the same condition as its replacment but i didn't take a really good look at it.
