Ok, so a mate bought XJ 95 model last weekend, had flat battery and was missing starter motor so could not start it, as is.
Problems we have since found out
1 - Car does not start with key - am thinking this is just ignition switch, havent really looked that much into it, can bridge starter relay at the moment to start it?
2 - ABS light on?? My diagnostic machine only does jeep from 97 onwards with DLC16 Plug not the early type diagnostic plug, so not sure of fault codes? Any common prob? Tried to get flash codes through cluster and only got 1 message related to TPS. I have heard that ABS Pumps can be problematic.
3 - Transmission takes off in 3rd or 4th in D position. When put into 1/2 it takes off in 1st really well. i am assuming transmission is in Fail safe or something, is Trans Control unit common issue or could it be related to ABS??
4 - When took it for a drive after 50m down the road starts coughing, backfiring when you hard accelerate. and all throttle cuts out completely. Ran flash code and came up with Throttle position sensor, am gonna try a new one today.
thanks

For #3 first thing I would look at is the TCM getting power ? (and earth)
The AW4 is shifted by a combination of cable and TCM solenoid setting if it only shifts where the cable shifter is set to points to TCM problem
