im lookin at gettin a G60 for a comp truck?
if all goes to plan, i will be running in the Nissan Trials in standard class, but after that will be looking at doing some mods.
The diffs in these are they reasonably strong? as i will be looking at running reasonable sized tyres. the body will be trimmed up a tad, to suit its new purpose, and may even be converted into a ute, or the ass end will be tubbed to suit the rubber. i believe the 4l petrol motors put out some nice power for what they are? anything to look out for if using this for a base comp truck?

The H260 rear diff found in all G60 Utes is very strong. It is a touch bigger than the dana 60. A detroit locker also fits it. it will bolt right in under your standard G60. The stock diffs are C216 and are fairly strong, just a touch smaller than a dana 44. For cheap mods since it is a comp or trails rig you could weld up the diffs. Also the front diff could get welded up and it won't be a problem, if only used offroad. A stock C216 open diff can easily handle 34" tires with no problems....yet they are known to break if worked super hard. Mostly just the axle will break. Lift a tire off the ground, spin it, drop it and BAM broke axle. MQ C200 diffs will fit under the G60 with only slight mods, just use an early one that is offset. The spring are just a 1/2" different between the C200 and the C216. Steering system would have to be modified also.
The P engine, yes it is a P engine not a P40...it is a good motor that will run on piss for years. It puts out around 145hp and 225lbs. You can get a sizable amount more out of this motor with a header and electronic ignition. Carb may give you a problem though on steep grades. A Weber carb can cure this problem. A adaptor plate is needed to fit a Weber. A Rochester, Carter and the Hitachi all bolt on the P engine though. In the USA our Patrols have a stock water tight ignition system though good to 40" deep.
The tranny, a 3spd, is kind of a weak point. It won't break but you lack synchro on 1st and rev. Plus 1st low is not low enough for serious climbing. No way to fix this without dumping the tranny and fitting a new one.
Power steering from an MQ will nearly bolt right up but requires modifying the steering shaft.

okay, just a quick question, The G60 and the Mqs i believe came out with a similar 4L motor, I have an old MQ4 speed layin around, can i get the bell housing a 4 speed P40 and fit the 4 speed to the G60? will this work?
also i believe the low range in the MQ box is lower than that of the G60 box.

Yes the 4spd should bolt up to a P40. But this will depend on a few things....did the tranny come from a diesel or a P40 MQ? If it came from a P40 you may have a chance...
The next thing is you likely do not have a P40 engine, you have a P engine. Look at the number stamed on the block, this is on the RHS in the USA and should be for you too. If it say P than it is not a P40. Also look at your vin plate, it shows engine number and will say P or P40. The P40 was not put in to Patrols untill 79.
My 1980 LG61 has a P40 engine and the MQ 4spd. There is a difference in the engine mount locations and bell housing plus the oil filter...a few internal parts are different too. The tranny mounts are not the same. So it is not the same engine. If you have a P it not going to bolt up without adaptors. Dellow makes v8 adaptors to the stock box. They also make them for the 4spd so you could use a v8 and the 4spd that way....the low 1st is a share lower in the 4spd. It is also synchro on all 4 while the 3spd is only synchroed on the top 2 gears.
Lastly...if you used a P40 bellhousing on a P engine it may work. I am not real sure as I don't have them side by side to check...the P40 is 3000 miles from me!

i was looking at axels the other day, the early coarse spline dont look to strong but did notice the later ones are a 37 spline and thick.
Am considering building a G60 diff for another project that i have, i will use 2 short side axels, does anyone know how to convert these to disc?

i've seen a g60 with discs it had vn comm booster, master, front & rear calipers and landcruiser fr discs on the front and hilux solid fr discs on the rear and homemade brackets to mount the calipers, I'II tell you it stopped 1000000 times better than with the standard drums.

i will have a look at this on tuesday, i am thinking that pajero discs have a bigger off set so they will sit in over the hub making it reasonably easy to make brackets and attach them to where the outer floater bolts up.
by using the 2 short sides it is about 120mm narrower than the diff that i have now, should work out nice.

I had been told before by an Aussie that MQ C200 knuckles bolt on the C216 G60 knuckles. Thus all you had to do was swap knuckles and you have front disc brakes. He said you had to shorten the tie rod also. After inspecting both diffs I don't think you can do it because the stub axles is a different length. Perhaphs I am wrong though and it will work.
MQ power steering will go right in the G60. The steering box almost bolts right up. Custom bracket for the pump/resivor and you nearly there. Custom steering shaft that combines the G60 and MQ ones and it is a done deal.

i'd say you would keep the G60 stub axle and bearings. as the stub axle length would suit the CV shaft length. that is how it works out with using the MQ knuckles on a GQ housing.

Yea that seems right. The guy who told me about it also works for ARB and talked about grinding/shaving down his ring & pinion to fit a C200 locker also. May be worth a shot....
One question...why would you want to put an MQ knuckle on a GQ??
