moving lowers to upper and fitting long lower arms ANYONE?

Post by big lux »

Just wondering if anyone has tried fitting superiour long arms to the lower of a gq rear. Then fitting there adjusable stock length lower arms to the top, and custom making the mounting point to the chassie for them?
Or if not would this work?

I plan on runing in the winch challenges and dirt spritz up here. Have a gq with 4 inch lift, 38s ,4.6s, auto and worked, charged ls1.

Thought this should increase flex abit and also reduce any axel tramp i may come across?

I did it maybe 4 years ago on a GU ute. I made my own long arms though, would be similar in length to superiors though. I never saw it drive, the owner ran out of $ and sold the truck. The new owner is in NQ somewhere.

I moved the upper trail arm cross member further down the chassis and cut the trail arm mounts off and flipped them on top the the cross member. It was changed slightly after I did the mod, so I was told. I have not seen it since so cannot comment on its performance or how it was changed.

You dont need to go to the extra work, they work fine with standard upper adjustables.
By changing the upper arms you will not gain any more flex, just concentrate on setting up the shock lengths correctly , this is the key to getting maximum usable flex out of the rear of a patrol.

I was using 18 inch travel shocks in the rear and it used everybit of them, "of the shelf " 5 inch Micro Alloy coils with a 30mm coil spacer as the truck was pretty heavy.
The rear steer was pretty good considering it still utilises the factory top arm mounts with just our long arms and raised shock mounts, we even retained the panhard rod !.

Sure we could have done a custom triangulated rear end but this truck was built to prove that you could acheive a winning combination without the big dollars, and jeez it won a lot of races !
Over the years more and more guys have fitted the Long Arms and now it is very common amongst offroad racers, winch challenge trucks, Rockcrawling as well as street 4x4's.

For the photo i am pretty sure we had the shocks out but the height of the ramp was the limiting factor.

Take into consideration they are 38 inch tires and have a good look at opposing sides to get a indication of the travel , even in the front all we did was fit the SuperFlex Arms.

The long arm kit is a great improvement for a Patrol. Have fitted them to my GU ute and a mates GQ ute. It transformed the car. Just feels like the power is straight to the ground, it seems to have stopped the twisting feel on acceleration of the short arsm.

Mick, what rear shock do u recommend for the long arm kit. My ute has 5 inch EFS springs with EFS extreme shocks. The lower shock mount has been lifted with your shock mounts. I know the current shock is way too short.

Cheers

x2 im torn bettween the SRC and new amada xtream
going to run 6 inch shocks in the rear with 4 inch lift and custom shock mounts. How do they compare? noticed the open/ closed lengths of the SRC are beta.

If modding your mounts are not a problem then fit low mounts on the diff, make a top shock bar/ mount to fitt around 17 inch travel 2.0 shock like the AMADDAXTREME or the Profender.
We can sell either brand less the coils in "coil over remote res" style for $295 each or with dual rate coils $495 each
Its easy to work out your height's , first fit the low mounts on with a few tacks, fit the fully compressed shock into the low mounts, now ramp the vehicle up to find full compression and allow approx extra 30-50mm Make sure you keep the shocks on the exact angle as factory or you will sacrifice handling and risk the shocks hitting the chassis during the movement of the panhard rod.
The height the compressed shock is at now will be the height to make the top mounts.
This is mentioned very basic and i am not going into every detail but you guys will get the general idea.
As far as the coils dropping out check this and resololve it as needed by way of drop out cones or coils that will suit better.
I do the compression way as that is the most important as you can always limit down travel by means of limiting strap but up travel is of more use as it lowers your centre of gravity during compression and has maximum contact patch on the ground where down travel you are making your centre of gravity further away with less usable contact patch.
Like is said it is only breifly explained.
