My new toy - Series 1 Disco

Hi guys,

I am new here and have just bought myself a little toy as I am unable to travel O/S as I was hoping due to lack of funds... so I did the logical thing and bought a disco haha!
It's a 92 model with 5dr and auto, 300k on the clock, is a 1 owner (brit specialist mechanic), paint really good cept for some fading on roof and bonnet needs a respray, running gear in great cond - runs cool, smooth shifts, not blowing smoke etc.

I'd love a bit of advice for those willing to give it - mainly on the following items:

* New rear wheel bearings - I have been quoted about $600 by ULR Land Rover and $1000 by Ritter LR (including a semi-major service) are these prices fair or is there somewhere else you can recommend. I am not interested in doing it myself as I don't have the tools, the time or the ability!

* Semi-Major service - I think it was called a b2 service by ULR and was quoted about $650 for this service, is this standard for this type of service and is there any harm in having it done by Kmart Tyre and Auto for example?

Also have a 'wanted' ad in the classifieds I'd love you to help with!

A 3.5 disco is pretty low tech so $650 for a service is a rip off, if you cant change oils and replace filters then i wouldnt have bought a 19 yo 4wd. I would find a local workshop who can service it for you for probably half that or have a crack and do it yourself.

My only bit of advice is if you don't know much about LR I'd recommend using someone who does - ie not KMart etc. Then again LR is generally very expensive (dealer)

Landy's will go on and on if looked after - but cannot handle the punishment a 4.2 Cruiser or Patrol can take. They need regular servicing. I made the mistake of skipping an auto service and paid the price Lesson learnt!!

There are plenty of LR or British mechanics around. Re the cost - I guess it depends - if they are doing an auto service, change all oils (inc brake, power steering etc) I would have though a little lower, but it adds up. These things are simple to do yourself on the older models - perhaps consider buying a manual from LR - then get them to do the once over, and 'tricky' bits

Is your disco Tdi or V8i?
