cruiser 5 speed rebuld????

Post by camo shorty »

Ok i have all the parts for my h55 5speed cruiser gearbox, have nearly finished rebuilding it i have the counter and main gears in,
problem? the counter gear has approx 0.5mm backward - foward movment i bought a workshop manual but it doesnt give me a spec for the thrust movement. all it says is ''fit a circlip tho the front of the counter shaft for minmal axial movement'' is 0.5mm minimal? has anyone rebuilt a cruiser 5 speed and had this problem?

any tips appreciated thanks.

have not worked on one yet but my factory manual states the same as yours one of 3 snap ring sizes 0,2,4 sizes 2.05-2.10, 2.15-2.20, 2.25-2.30. respectively. it does go on to say on page MT-36 that you measure with a feeler gauge the counter 5th gear clearance standard 0.10-1.30 and max 0.30 perhaps this is related to snap ring size? after a close look at all that i hope my H55F holds out till 1,000,000 klm along with the donk as i dont fancy rebuilding that mind smack. good luck

They don't use circlips to hold 5th gear on the counter shaft, there's a nut on the rear of the shaft. The only things that will effect it are either wear on the thrust washer or face of the gear where it contacts the thrust washer.

the circlip is on the front of the counter/lay shaft, i have tensioned the rear nut on the 5th gear. it says the front circlip is how u take up the axial movement. i take it using a thicker circlip to pull the bearing in tighter...?

The manual lists the 3 snap ring sizes with the instruction to select the ring that will allow " minimum axial play " there is no indication as to what constitutes acceptable axial play. If you are unhappy with what you have you may have to go cap in hand to an expert and ask for guidance. LOL Ed

The only circlip on the counter shaft is at the front, it only acts on the front bearing. the rear is done with the nut only. As long as the fifth gear hub is pressed in all the way the only reason for excessive axial movement is wear to the thrust faces.
