FJ40 SWB rear seat convertion - HELP!

Hi guys,
My wife informs me that she would now like to play in my toy too and that i need to add some rear seats for the kids.. "sigh". so, i was wondering if there is anyone out there that has done this mod... and can give some advice.. like.. will it have to be engineered? are there fixed positions for it to go?... stuff like that.

any and all help/info greatly recieved.

I had a place here in Victoria Install a two seater folding type in my 40 it cost about $1,200 a few years ago. It came with lap belts and child restraint clips and was supplied with a engineers certificate. I know there is cheaper options if you do it your self but as I was carrying my kids I wanted it done safely. The only problem I have now is we had a third child so now no room..................Cheers, Dazz

yikes, thats a lot. can you remember how they where fitted? did they bolt t othe floor or across the wheel arch?.. the latter would be good as i can still fit my draws in...

Mine were bolted to the floor between the wheel arches . I had a similar problem with wanting to stil fit my drawers but couldnt do it. I basicly unbolt the seat when not needed and bolt down the drawers using the same bolts. One other thing to consider is I also wanted to take the family 4x4 but in reality theres just not enough room...........Cheers, Dazz-

you would have to make up your own mounts as no seat was designed like that in the 40. talk to an engineer to see what he wants you to do. and then go for it.

hmm, so its ok for the passengers heads to be outside the roll cage?
not that my kids are that big...lol

this is good stuff.. love this board. i am an design engineer so i can do all this myself i think, with the guidance of a MV eng as suggested.

i rememberd that someone had some for sale a while back... just looked, that have gone. he only wanted 300 for them... bugga!

I put a swb MQ/MK patrol folding rear seat into a FJ40 bout five years ago, worked a treat. Seatbelts are part of the seat, so made sure the plates under the floor where big enough (over wat the engineer specified as minimum) and when not in use it folded up against the front seats leaving almost a standard sized tray!

Mate , have you thought of tracking down a wrecked Sierra and getting the mounts and seats etc out of one of them?

they are folding seats which would fit nicely i think.

my seat was in there when i got it so im no help.

hmm... not thought of that. are they nice and small?. i really only want this for a 6yo and a baby car seat. in reality i cant see the tribe coming out that much and really its only for the odd occation.

what i am looking to do is to mount something on the top of the wheel arched. obvioulsy this would be tied back down to the chasis with plate or angle. this would then allow me to still mount the draws for the recovery gear and stuff. if these Sierra seats are small.. like the Pajero rear ones, they could be ideal.

if anyone else is interested, once passed, i am happy to forward any drawings for manufacture to help others.

Go to members you can see photos of mine all enginer approved it is suzuki serria i just sold it complete with brand new seat belts for less than $300 all he had to do was bolt it in . As they say you missed out buy that much

Awww man!... what an epic story.. and i didnt get to see the seats as it only goes up to page 6.. but i think i found your set up on your forsale site so i have the layout..

checked eBay last night too... thanks for the tip tho.

i was having same problem but got a suzuki vitara back seat cost $100 from suzuki wreckers it fits good, there are two holes at front of the tray they line up to the brackets on the seat, then just drill two more for the locking bracket. im installing it tomorrow i can post some pic's if u want, i will let you know if i have any problems.

i am having 2 mod plates added to my truck for change of rear axle and brakes to disc.. off a 60 serries.. and i am doing the work myself, but the certs are only costing me 120 bucks for both!

the QLD transport where really helpful.. gave me 3 people that could carry out the work so i could get some prices...

cant see where the money went for your seat conversion....

Yeh I think I was a bit naive when I had it done and a bit nervous to do it myself when it came to my kids sitting in the back. I think I also expcted it to be a bit more engineered as well but as it was it was very basic.

P.s That amount did include the seat trimmed the same as my front buckets, and two child restraint clips, two chid harnesses and engineerind cert.

only had to drill the two holes for locking bracket and then two holes for seat belts
