busted panhard mount
busted panhard mount
G'day all. have just found out why my 89 GQ shorty was trying to shake me off the road. While trying to fit my new adjustable panhards i have noticed the panhard mount is tearing away from the chassis. It is torn the entire length of the mount starting at the weld and running up the chassis about 5mm below the steering box bolts and also has a crack right down near where the panhard rod bolts in. It is only on the inside, the steering box side is fine.
What i am wondering is would weldind and realigning the existing bracket, and then chasing up the support brace (which mine clearly does not have) be a strong enough fix or should i replace the whole panhard mount with a new one and then brace that?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: busted panhard mount
I'm no expert, but i would think that a decent weld job with the support bracket as well would be fine, that tearing is why the support was fitted as a factory recall i believe.
Re: busted panhard mount
Yeah i would think so. Ive got a mate who is a boilermaker and can throw a pretty deadly weld. just wanna make sure it doesnt happen again. Planning a few big trips.
Re: busted panhard mount

Re: busted panhard mount
Does anyone have any idea where i could chase a support bracket up. Been trying heaps of wreckers with no luck, tried Nissan and they have one for $260....
Might have to fab something up.

Re: busted panhard mount
Is it possible to brace it? I have braced mine to the other side of the chassis in a GQ. I know from competing in outback challenges years ago this is what everyone was doing or they did tear the chassis apart. If its braced i don't think you need the bolt on nissan strengthening brace.

Re: busted panhard mount
Yeah i might do both i think. Just to make sure. I saw one done that ran from the top of the coil tower and down the outside of the panhard mount. supports it from both sides.

Re: busted panhard mount
righto sounds like thats the go. what sort of material did ya use? Well how thick was the steel. Any pictures would be greatly appreciated. My bracket rocked up today
Re: busted panhard mount
Think i used just a lenght of rhs, probly about 30mm x 2mm wall. Doesn't have to be anything super strong, theres only load on it length ways,
