Hi all,
I have a '85 73 series middy with k083 diffs and a 305 chev. I broke the diff on sat due to a spirited take off. I havent got the truck home yet so I havent gotten a chance to have a look but what usually breaks in these? I am just trying to figure out how much I am up for. I have also had a look around and I am trying to figure out what else has the same diff. Am I correct in thinking that all 70 series have the same rear diff but some have a different ratio?
Any help would be great.

Re: Broke the diff...
G'day mate, not sure what you mean by k083 diffs? I thought 73's had 9.5" Cruiser diffs? It's usually the crownwheel teeth that let go first. The pinion gear can break from spring wrap too. If it's a 9.5" diff, 40, 60 and 70 series centers will fit provided the gearing's the same as the front. Look on eBay for a 2nd hand centre. New gears are $400ish plus $200 for bearings then the install.
You can take out the rear tailshaft and axles on a full floater then drive in front wheel drive by selecting 4 hi and locking the hubs to get it home.
Whereabouts are you? I've got some good factory 4.11 gears (Sydney) and can rebuild it provided you've got new bearings or are happy with your current ones.

Re: Broke the diff...
Thanks for your help 91mav.
k083 is whats printed on the build plate. So yeah its a 9.5" centre. I am not sure what the ratio is but I am pretty sure that its 4.11, what the best way to check, on the back of the diff? I am located in melbourne, eastern suburbs, and the truck is in the western suburbs. I am about to get road side assistance so it will get towed home, cheap insurance i figure cos i am pretty dure I am going to do something stupid again.lol. I will let you knw if I need the grears.

Re: Broke the diff...
The only fool proof way to check is to divide the number of ring gear teeth by the pinion gear teeth ie. 37 / 9 = 4.11. It will most likely be 4.11.
Re: Broke the diff...
If you need a center I have one for $125 you can have in Brisbane.
I'm not quitting drinking, I'm retiring at the top of my game - sporting comeback likely.
