Buick in my hilux

I have been considering putting a 3800 out of a vn in my 174 lux because I am hangin for a little horsepower.

Being the tightarse I am, I would rather keep the engineers out of things.

As I understand, I am allowed to put a motor in a car without an engineers as long as I am putting in a motor from the same manufacturer as my car assuming that the car came out factory standard with an engine with the same number of cylinders as the new motor. ie hilux hand grenade 3.4ltr v6 + Buick 3800 = all good.

I am curious if anyone has tried putting a 3.8 out of a lexcen into a lux, technically it's a motor which comes standard in a Toyota, therefore, assuming my understanding of the law is correct, I would not need an engineers cert.

I'm in Victoria if ya need to know.

Any help would be much appreciated.

The way the laws read in qld. The motor must be out of the same model car ie a vn v6 can have a 304 put in it cause it was a option for that model. So if you had a new hilux you could put a3.4/4l in it depending on the model but not a buick but with a old lux your going to need it engineered

Best advice is do as much reading as possible. It's not as cheap of a conversion as people make it out to be and in my opinion the 3.8 commo motor is a rubbish engine.

I think that if youre shelling out to put a Commy V6 in your Lux, youre better off doing it properly and fitting a V8, Holden injected 304 is a good one.
Would cost roughly around the same to do the conversion, youll have a much nicer sounding engine, and better power.

I know of a half finished one with a financially desperate owner. It's not under any encumbrances and I'm sure you could make a rude offer for the lot and walk away with a sweet deal. It's virtually ready for engineering.

a good friend put a 4ltr v8 like out of the hundred series but it was a lexus sedan, picked up a half cut for like 1500, old school hilux 86xtra cab?? and it gets 6ltrs 100 on 33inch tyres.
loaded up with roof top tent, doing 90 got 13ltrs
plenty of power

its called a 1UZ-FE and it is quite a common conversion..... these economy figures are awesome.... about twice as good as the engine fitted to a soarer which it comes fitted to standard ... your good friend sounds like he has either messed up his numbers or is yankin your chain

no the figures are real.
he didnt get up it to get the 6ltrs/100, just down the highway. CRUISE about 90kms n hr.
the hilux has an auto, and old nissan transfer case, doesnt like to do a 100 on the highway to take care of the transfer case.
the hilux would have to weigh a third of a 100 series, i wouldnt doubt his economy, his seriously a clue guy!!
id put that motor in my hj47 trayback but id weigh the same as a 100 series and probably use even more fuel, than a 100 would.

he had trouble cooling the motor though!!!!! and the computer was a big problem, took it to a guru in sydney.
