You essentially just need a pre-amp unit and wire it to a normal car amp.

You can get pre-amp kits from Jaycar, but might struggle to find a small-cheap commercial unit as most of this gear will be aimed at PA business.

Jaycar, or Radio Parts might have something in their catalouges, otherwise anyone that deals to the commercial PA market.

I just bought a head unit from jaycar, $96 from memory, has 3.5mm aux, SD card, and USB input and radio. No CD. 4 way means 4 outputs yeah? For 4 speakers?

hey guys,

Twisty is prob closest at the moment, but i don't want to cut a hole in my dash, i have a fiberglass tub so there is no pre drilled hole for it, and it currently looks really neat and tidy, so i was thinking about having a unit of some sort just to plug an Ipod into and i can tuck it away underdash or in the glove box, and just plug the cable in when i want, out of sight out of mind,

what do i mean by a 4 way, i want to be able to connect 4 speakers up to it, i guess it's hard to explain, but if you look at a standard head unit, and just look at the aux plug, that's all i want off it, not the full face, no radio or cd player,

cheers guys,

p.s. where is jayco? i haven't heard of them before, i haven't been in briz for that long,

You can get an amplifier and plug your ipod straight into it using a lead with a 3.5mm plug on one end and the rca plugs on the other end. Just set the gains on the amplifier to the level you want, and use the ipod controls as you normally would when using the ipod to cahnge songs, volume etc. I did this for a while until i got sick of forgetting the ipod and having no music as a result.

This.

All you need is a 4 channel amp and a RCA input cable from whatever you are using to play your music.

That Jaycar unit... at 20W RMS per channel, that is pretty much equivalent to 50Wx4 "peak power" isn't it? I never fail to get this confused.

There's a "deckless" car stereo called a Beat 175 that looks good too. Or cheap, anyway.

This thread is really interesting; it is amazing to me how few good choices are out there for a completely non-mechanical (ie no tape, no CD, no DVD etc) stereo. Including one without a detachable face. Surely detachable faces have well and truly had their day, especially with cheap head units. They aren't worth stealing like they used to be. I hate them, every so often I hit the "detach" button and... grrr. It's pointless!

I agree with this too. You could also install a cheap ipod or mp3 player dock and leave that hooked to the amp, then you have a sort of "removable head unit" while driving. Depending on what phone you have that could become your digital car stereo.

that was the idea chimpboy,

we are doing a bit of touring, so cd's wont work anyway ( due to currogations) and wont have reception, plus im hoping to put a super charger on the v8, so music will just be background noise

Incidentally Jaycar is also a good place to get a suitable amp, if you want one that actually puts out as much power as it claims to.

Something like this: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dash-MP3-SD- ... 27b36b243f" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; might be cool as it has bluetooth. This one looks a bit cheap and nasty but something on the same lines perhaps...

Ah... eg: http://www.digitalcentre.com.au/p/44007 ... eiver.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Sorry I realise it's not quite what the OP was asking about but at first glance I like it, so... there you go.

i did it in my race truck with alpine 2 way and 6x9's. Figured in a 2700kg car I could afford the weight. They need 1volt input which is a good mp3 player like creative on full bore. Ipods etc dont have the output voltage as high - so you will struggle with volume. Rs components sells heaps of amps that would suit but all will work out dearer / bigger and worse then a sub $100 head unit. You also have control with a head unit.

don't do it. Run a head unit.

I just built a portable speaker system with 2x 6" type r's and an alpine head unit - it sounds awesome and has a 18 amp hour sealed lead acid batter to work up the beach and a down light transformer to charge it. Works a treat - I'll throw some pics up

cheers bru

yea music is pretty important,

i might take your advise and look again to see if i can find an out of the way spot for the head unit, i was going to make a small box inbtween my seats, and fit it in there, but my fridge fits there,

oh and i don't have a roof to mount anything too, which cuts down alot of my options.

Behind the passenger seat? You may be able to mount so you can still see it & adjust it from your seat, but the passenger will have a hard time farking with it.

You could consider hanging something from your roll bar, but that's another can of worms.

Depends on cost but alpine make a mobilehub and I think jvc were considering it too. Basically is just a box you mount anywhere which is like a headunit without the controls so you run amps and speakers and even dvd screens off it. You'd just need a rca adaptor for your ipod then you got full control of volume / track from the ipod. Run this wither a good amp with parametric eq 5 band to speakers and you then got full control of sound as well. Problem is this is a bit exxy for most folks as the mobile hub itself is 1500.

Btw at least one person here doesn't think jaycar make good amps. Their rms ratings are crappy compared to other similar priced amps, at least the higher end ones. Jaycar though is the best one stop shop for most things electrical as far as wiring goes.

Very true they are honest ratings and as you mentioned many arent and i applaud them for it, however jaycars top amp (about 5 year ago) was 600 and offered a rms rating of 60 rms a channel, the us audio amp I got for 620 offered 75 rms a channel. Depends on how serious you get but when measured the jaycar amp was 63.4 rms a channel where as the US audio I had was 81.1 rms a channel. Both amps were brought within a week of each other and tested on my current stereo setup.

Jaycar make a good budget amp, but quality is second to none for me so i got the US audio. Proof is in the fact that my US audio 5 years later and donated to a mate in need is still going, where as the jaycar special died 2 years ago mine was loose in the boot of the car and looks like a bomb hit it where the jaycar was properly mounted and is basically scratchless.

I won't argue... you are probably on the money as I am not that much of a big spender with this kind of stuff. FWIW I do have two jaycar amps that are in about their fifth car now and going strong though.

Personally I didn't took it down to the local car audio store and they did it for me. they have some sort of machine that pulls full wattage from the amp then tells them what the amp is actually outputing. This was a place that did comp systems. Sorta blokes you'd see if you wanted to put a 15000 stereo in a charade.

ok, just wondering ( i haven't called jaycar yet still pondering on the best solution)

but what would you say an average amp, too suit my needs would cost? (looking at a min spend)

budget isn't that much of an issue (not that im rich, but it's not urgent so i can save)

Most average amps are around the 400 Mark. Do not buy any amp that does not state rms or nominal rating. Match your amp to your speakers. 75w rms speakers will sound best on a 75 rms or higher amp. Most amps are 60 rms so dont go below this.

This is going into a soft top 40 series cruiser. I wouldn't be spending lots on an amp that is going to be both exposed to the elements (rain, mud, dust...lots of dust) and to theft. Plus in an open top 4wd it is going to sound crap on anything other than a mega dollar system so I'd just be buyng the next sub $200 4 channel amp you see on special in a brand name you can pronounce.
