had it long enough to find all the little bugs![]()
it gets up to 100 degrees on the temp guage occasionally in stop start driving. did a full rad flush and replaced the yucky brown stuff with nice green coolant. its not using coolant as far as i can tell but ill report back in a few days on that one.
compression is good. i work for a crash parts supply company (all crash parts in virginia if any of you need stuff /shameless plug) so i can get a new radiator dirt cheap, should i go for copper core or alloy/plastic tank?
will also get myself a water pump and do that as i go
its well over due for a oil and filter change and a auto service too. going to do both asap. i guess this will help cooling a LOT too.
What grade of oil is good for it? i have a 6l bottle of good 20w/50 if that will do it? how many litres will i need? filter is here waiting to go once i have the right oil.
again the same with the trans, is it like a commodore auto where you just pull the bottom off, let all the oil drain out and replace the filter? i have a mate that runs a ultra tune and that have one of the auto flush machines, is this a better way to do the auto service? does the jeep auto use a special grade of oil or can i use regular dx III?? how many litres will i need with a filter change?
im planning to take her off road so would i get any good benefit to cooling to the transmission by installing a trans cooler i have here spare, its about 20cm x 20cm.
thanks guys mucho grande appreciating any help forwarding,
Luke.
yeah it seems your right mate, ive found this to be the go from looking about elsewhere.Steve F wrote:
100c is not hot in an XJ and is a typical temperature, not unusual for them to sit between 95c and a touch over 100c, the electric fan doesn't even cut in until 105c

What aboitu installing a cooler thermo fan switch? if the guys are saying the thermos don't kick in until 105, then why not get one that kicks in at 85?pugsly wrote:I've been running a '96 XJ for a while. It's quite capable, but the overheating is the bane of my life.
So far I've replaced water pump, thermostat, viscous clutch on the fan and I've put 50mm spacers on the back of the bonnet. It's under control for now, but I haven't been off road for a good 12 months.
There's also supposed to be a good aftermarket radiator available in Australia for the XJ. That'll be my next step if the last lot of fixes don't work.
