HELP - Hilux

Post by 91Mav »

G'day fellas,

Just picked up a YN65 on Saturday...
Image

It's got the extremely powerful 3Y under the hood and it's sat around for a while. After rebuilding the carb (these Nikki's are rubbish), replacing the exhaust manifold gasket and adjusting the timing, she's running ok. Just. Just need to overhaul the front brakes and cut some rust out before rego.

She's my first Lux and was hoping you might be able to help with a couple of questions:
1. Transfer Case protection. Do I: (A) Put in a 2" body lift and lift the driveline with it OR (B) Build/buy a new cross member. Any pictures or cross members you've designed would be appreciated.
2. Commy V6 and T700. Besides the T/C adaptor, engine mounts and new exhaust, what else am I looking at? I'll get a VN/VP box because they're not electronically controlled like the 4L60's. I also plan on getting a VS/VT engine (because they're newer/less KM's) but with a VN/VP ECU (less anti-theft stuff - I've been told anyway). Does this sound ok or am I way off. Any links to a build up would be great. I've already searched...
3. RUF or coils in the front? I've got a 60 series Cruiser diff in the shed that I've already shaved and have 5.29's for it.
4. IFS leafs or coils in the rear? I was planning on running an 80 series diff in the rear with it's standard links so it's easy to get engineered. I want to keep this one legal.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Josh

Theres heaps of info around the interwebs on Commy V6 into Lux, do a search here, and check out the surf forum too, they have alot of info on conversions.

Coils or Leaves, its a personal preference. Much easier to do RUF and IFS rears and have something capable.

Engineering is required for the engine swap, so talk to the engineer about your plans and ideas, he will then give you some idea what he will want to see for it to be engineered.

Ifs rear and extendeds that I have hear waiting for u. Mess around with the leaf packs and u will find something that works really well and ruf the front with some massive hoops. These lux's work so good in the front once u get rid of things like the torque rod and shit standard steering. High steer Faithy. Will be a hell of alot less work to go this way and u will get plenty enough flex and comfort.

I think you meant, "these lux's work so well in the front once u get rid of the ifs" Dan? Haha. I might take u up on those ifs rears and do the ruf and see how she goes. Did u go 12" travel shocks?

VT motors are the worst for conversions because they have different security.
Youll need bigger fuel lines the length of the car, surgetank, efi fuel pump, speedflow fittings or similar, regulator, engine mounts,wiring/......the list is endless.
Im doing an LS1 conversion att he moment and there were soooo many things i didnt take into account. All the little stuff adds up.

I have a fully recoed 4Y here for sale if your interested?
