PLEASE HELP - HJ47 2H wont start - short video included

Post by RedneksRacing »

Hi Fellas,

I need some help from those of you who are mechanically minded.

My 1983 HJ47 2H has been sitting around for a couple years while I worked away in Perth. Nobody on the farm used it for this period of time. Now I have returned home and want to get the big girl going.

The problem is im not a very good mechanic. I know the basics but when it comes to troubleshooting im stuffed.

The engine turns over no problem as you can hear in the video.

I hooked up a fully charged battery
Checked the fuel filter, clean and full of diesel
Fuel tank full
Disconnected the air filter line off the top of the carby to give her some more air
Made sure I initiated the immobilser before i tried to start (seen in video)
When trying to start, I press the accelerator a little to see if it helps.... no change.

I dont know what it could be.

Please point me in the right direction.

Cheers heaps.

Luke

crack the injector lines open up at the injector. once it starts to want to run close them off.
this gets all the air out of the lines.

I agree crack the lines at the injectors, pump the primer whilst cranking, there should be fuel coming out around the cracked lines.
If there is fuel re-tighten the lines and try again.
If it still dosent start.
The landcruisers have a failsafe, low oil pressure switch which suts down the engine if there is not enough oil pressure. If the car has been sitting it may not be able to pump up the oil, check this by taking out the oil pressure switch and cranking it over oil should come out of the hole. If not you may need to pull the front timing cover of the engine to replace the oil pump gears or pack a small amount of grease in it if all the gears are ok the sump will also need to be removed to do this.

if it had been sitting for ages I'd be tempted to replace the oil + oil filter to make sure you know what condition its in..

no accelerator is needed to start a diesel, only once its fired, only if its a little rough idling to get the oil pressure up, mines a 2H same vintage but HJ47 84. the last before the 75's :finger:

SHE"S ALIVE!!!!

I cracked the fuel lines at the injectors, bled them, bled the nipple on top of the fuel filter housing, primed her up and she started within 5 seconds.

Forgot how fun it is to cruise around in a HJ47!

Thanks for the help!

Much appreciated.

Yeah I love them.

Looked for one for ages.... couldnt find one without rust so I bought myself a whole lot of work basically.

If anyone ever wants one, they come up for sale mainly in Western Australia I have been told. This is because mining companies and electricity companies had them made/modified back in the day.

Here is one for sale now....
