85 4runner 2L trouble
Hi All, I'm a first time user of this forum and would like some advise from all you experts out there, all help will be greatly appreciated.
I have a 1985 4runner, which starts and idles great, however when she reaches operating temp about 400m's down the road is when all the trouble starts, she will start to struggle to get over 2000 - 2500rpm, she will start to smoke it is a very light blue in colour, I have clean fuel in the tank, I have changed the fuel filter and bled the fuel system, I have also check the fuel system for any air leaks, water and blockages, please help.

Does the blue smoke occur from startup and does it get any worse when you get down the road? Does it idle fine? Does it rev fine with no load? How bad is the smoke ie. bushfire or durry smoker? When were your injectors last serviced? Is it using oil?
400 metres isn't enough to get the engine to running normal temperature so there's a chance you could be burning oil if this doesn't correct itself after a bit of heat gets into the engine. If the injectors are known to be in good working order you should get a compression test done to see what's going on.

Thankyou for your reply, It does not smoke on start up, the smoke starts after driving for 3 or 4 minutes and its durry smoke intermittent, it idles fine, the injectors have not been serviced for about 4 years, the car has been sitting idle for the last 2 years as of 3 months ago, the car was running fine after a good bleed and then 3 days after this trouble started.

hey mate had the same problem as u after my car sat 4 abot 6 months i took the tank out and took the little filter off the sender in the tank but if u hace a single or extra cab u might b able to do it with out takein the tank out but anyway i just cleand it with kero and dried it out the best way to find out is get a 20l drum of fuel and some clear hose from bunnings and join it to the primmer on the firewall put the tank in the car and go 4 a drive if the car runs fine the problem is in the tank hope that helps

No problems, seeing the car has been sitting for a while I would suspect either oil residue in your injectors or a nasty case of glazing on your bores. Oil can glob up in the injector and cause all sorts of running issues especially after sitting for a while. The fact there is no smoke on startup and starts down the road would however point to a glazing issue, the oil surrounding the piston rings has gummed up possibly causing a loss of compression and poor running.
So next questions:
Have you changed the engine oil since you have it back on the road?
Can you rev the engine under no load? ie. neutral

The_4br sounds a bit dangerous with a 20l tank of fuel in the cabin as I a smoker haha, I'll give it ago this weekend.
UhhOhh, I have change the oil twice so far, once to change the old oil as it was sitting for so long, and then once due to adding a cleaner in to the oil, after the engine has been running for 3 t0 4 mins whether it is under load or not it starts to bog down, trying to get it over 2000 t0 2500 rmp is almost impossible.
Trying to get my hands on a compression tester, hard to find one that reaches 1000psi these days, and also an injector tester equally as hard especially running upto about 6000psi.

yer mate thats wit mine did i just figured that i had enough fuel in the lines to get about 200m but that was all

Yeah you might be better off getting a garage to test them for you. I'd do a compression test first just to make sure it's not gummed up rings.
I should add that previous advice is assuming your tank was cleaned properly and your pump is getting clean fuel if there's an oil deposit on the bottom of the tank it would do what you're suggesting. It's hard to get to the problem when it's not infront of you but good luck.

You could jerry rig a can with clean diesel down the feed line to the injector pump and see if this makes any difference. At least it'd rule out dirty tank.

UhhOhh and the_4br, Thankyou both for your advise, after adjusting the tappets and cleaning out the full system and ripping the injectors apart and back together again, I finally found the problem, it was a little filter on the breather hose from the fuel tank, it was blocked, so after how many hours working of everything else, it could have been a five minute job only if it was not tucked into a little creaves above the tank.
As you know the car was fine until so much pressure built up in the tank and the injector pump couldn't such any more fuel.
