How strong are they??
Mate just went offroading with me and apparently hes got cracked spring mounts and when he took it in for a quote.. he was told that the whole chassis is rooted.
That possible?? as its a lot of work to change chassis's over to a newish one eg later model one?
He's been told that pre -93 chassis's arent that strong as the post 93??
Any input??

Strength of a 1990 landcruiser 80 series chassis??
Moderators: toaddog, Elmo, DUDELUX
there are problems with the early 80's chassis yeah. if they have seen a lot of corrugations and/or towing, they can crack around the steering box and panhar rod mounts, spring mounts, and where crossmembers are welded into the chassis. it happens to all kinds of vehicles - not just 80 series.
it's hard to imagine one so badly cracked it can't be fixed, but if it needs major repairs then it might need the body off for access which will make a fairly expensive repair.
does the truck have high km and/or a history of long offroad driving?

Have no idea what to do, one professional says that it's cracked and bent which requires a new chassis....
Another says just weld a plate up and drive, but i'm concerned about the bends etc
Sick of being F***Ked around
What should i do ?

take it to somewhere reputable that is willing to warranty and guarantee their work - in Sydney I'd say take it to Nathan's but I don't know who you should take it to in Brisbane. somewhere that will go to the trouble of putting it on the autorobot and making sure it's all straight. if their quote is more that you're willing to pay then get it fixed on the cheap and worry about it all the time, or sell it to some unsuspecting bugger for a "bargain" price.

Not an uncommon issue, see the link - http://www.mynrma.com.au/motoring/cars/ ... oy80.shtml
Get a few quotes / opinions for repairs, the more the better if you have the time to do so and you'll be better informed.
Cracks will be obvious but you could do your own chassis drop on flat level concrete to check for bends. All you need is a plumb bob, chalk and a straight edge - not 100% accurate as expensive panel beater's infra red light setup but damn close for home use.

Looks like i'll have to go thru the whole ****king process with the Autorobot again.......
First time i did it, they wouldn't give me the ****king report.. All i got was this fax from the smash repairs stating this......
To Whom It May Concern:
After measuring chassis in my opinion it would be advisable to refit a second hand chassis due to fatigue and stress on certain points.
End of Fax
I faxed back asking for the full report with measurements how many mill's the chassis is out etc. NO REPLY
SERIOUSLY GETTING ****KED AROUND
