went to auto paint place today.

looking at acrylic paint 4l white at $100, colours at $150. but apparantly need to buff afterwards to get any decent shine. bugger that for a lark

then have synthetic enamel at $60 2l, $90 3l. guy reckons dont need to buff comes off gloss from the gun. he said prob 2l for my car :D . this seemed to be better option he reckoned, less fussing around and cheaper too

this does not include thinners, which range from $16 syn enamel to $22 for acrylic. then associated extras like masking, wet n dry etc

....so what do people reckon???? and, how hard is it for novice to set up gun for good result??????? so i go for red again (easy), white (less noticeable marks and cheaper) or another colour?

area54, paint job doesnt need to be bling bling, just bearable (as in, not complete shit :) ) this will be my drive to work car but as long as it looks average i'll be happy. and be able to afford more upgrades

also, can load any colour into aerosol for $11. bargain

I used the color OCEAN from the Wattyl Killrust range. Comes in a 2 litre can from bunnings or wherever. Used one of those CIG easysprayers and just thinned it down until it went on smooth. I jut then bought 4 cans of the same stuff in the spray pak to do all the little fiddly bits.

You can buy the stuff everywhere. The job looks good, but not much wouldnt on a 30 year old FJ40.... ;)

would post a pic but looks like thats no longer an option

Gun setup is not really the issue for this level of paint job, as long as the paint is at a good spraying consistency (bit more fiddly with acrylics, cake with enamels) around 30 psi or so from the compressor (but you can experiment with this - you don't want to vaporise the paint into excessive overspray). Just get the fan setting right, the rest is up to the technique and overlap.

Go the enamel. I did my MQ with it, easy to apply, :D comes up with a good finish, and you can do it with an electric spraygun. It was still shiny 3 years later even if it wasnt it so cheap to give it another coat. Good luck with it.

saga alright. everything is on hold atm, doing general repair around the house (you know what i mean, that huge "gunna to do list" that no-one does because you live there and put up with things :) ) so i can get some tenents in around 3 weeks. i'm moving south for winter :? , and now i need to find rental  .

will post some pics on what i have done tho in the next few days

yeah bj42, i noticed that. just a wash and wax is all you need. polish makes the paint look cloudy for some reason..
