Outers settle a dispute!
Working on the cruiser with Simmo (navvi) today and the discussion turns to the wheels on the truck and how I want to do weld on bead locks. I was saying that there isn't much point putting beadlocks flipped rims ( what I am currently running) and he was saying you can. His argument was that the inside bead will not take anywhere near the same amount of weight as the outside bead would, which I understand and would probably agree with in some/most cases.
My main reasoning behind saying that I don't think you can beadlock flipped rims is because Chris (roctoy) explained it to me and I pretty much trust his experience as I don't have the knowledge or experience to question or disagree with him.
So can anybody else help settle this debate?

Re: Outers settle a dispute!
I think it would be pretty hard to get the tyre on a rim that has been flipped and beadlocked.
You could double beadlock it!!!

Re: Outers settle a dispute!
I've done a set of 16x 8 flipped bead locks and had no troubles fitting the 37 treps to the rim. As for strength I would assume the bead lock ring adds strength. As for double bead locks you would have to have massive offset or a big rim at least 17s or I think the inner lock ring would foul on brakes and steering
Rims flipped from $50
Re: Outers settle a dispute!
Double/ or putting the beadlock on the inner side won't work, there's not enough room, I looked yesterday while we were discussing it

Whats the lowest pressure you have run and what sort of driving/terrain?

Re: Outers settle a dispute!
But some stauns........
serious but. Buy some external weld ons and don't look back . Only under some serious low pressure and stupid driving will you pop an inner bead. Or just buy some 17 inch double bead locks

That's what I will be doing though, I need to run the creepies at about 6 psi to get them to bag and I like doing stupid driving.

Re: Outers settle a dispute!
My theory is that if your going to pop an inner bead it doesn't matter which way the rim is facing. If we can keep the flipped rims then we don't need to fit wheel spacers.

Re: Outers settle a dispute!
And if you want to get real technical, 6psi is still alot of pressure on the side wall compared to a smaller tyre if you work it out in square inches.

Re: Outers settle a dispute!
BE CAREFULL!! I just beadlocked a set of 15" flipped rims for my 60 ute, and it was all for nothing! We were able to load a set of treps onto the back of a flipped rim because of their different bead (fabric or nylon?), but my 37" creepies would not go on to my rims. To the point where we destroyed the bead of a tire trying (in desperation). On some rims it may be possible (depending on how far down to the recess for the first bead to sit into is), and with some tyres, but I would be taking the wheel and tyre combo down to your tyre guy and getting the to see if they can load it from the back before starting the work. It's a lot of grinding and welding to do for nothing :(
Re: Outers settle a dispute!
Another option from Pirate4x4.
A few layers like this makes the safety bead 2mm higher or 4mm in higher in diameter, its harder too seat the bead and it should be a lot harder to unseat also. No more burping or bead leaks also.

Re: Outers settle a dispute!
You can help yourself out a lot by welding a strengthening ring on the inside bead. You only need a 10mm ring. Do that and wrap some tape around it and you'll be fine in most cases. Add that with an external bead lock and you'll only pop a bead with extreme circumstances.
There are a couple of options for internal beadlocks though.
Of course you can run stauns. I'd still strengthen the rims though. Pretty good combination and not too expensive.
Or you can run Rock Monster wheels which you can choose your own offset and they look the goods too.

Re: Outers settle a dispute!
You can't "weld on bead lock" a flipped rim, you would destroy the tyre trying.

Just sell the flipped rims and get some big offset regular ones then add beadlocks!

I'm pretty sure there's a difference between "driving hard" and " not being able to drive"!! Is it possible you may a little confused which it is that describes you better??
You will definately nee. Beadlocks if you are going to drive that rock garden at HoldIt Flatz the day before MOC next year mate!!
